Behind The Scenes

31 Oct

noakes-b

And here is number 90 of the 100 Baby Boomers I aim to sketch by the end of the year. I’m so excited to have reached this stage, I felt like giving up a couple of times along the way because there has been a lot of work behind the scenes to find people willing to sit for me, to find venues to draw them and to book people in, lots of admin. I’m grateful to all those who have been so willing to have me staring crossly at them for half an hour.

The More You Look…..

30 Oct

This is the 89th Baby Boomer out of my target of one hundred people sketches of people of my generation. At the risk of stating the obvious, there is such a huge range of features and faces. Normally we don’t really scrutinise people’s features because we’re brought up to think it’s rude to stare but I’m an artist, so I stare and the more you look the more you see and the more the differences between people become obvious.

The Scariest Combo

29 Oct

clements-t

When I started this epic task, to draw one hundred people of my generation, the Baby Boomers, there were two things that I found very hard to draw – spectacles and facial hair and the two together were the scariest combo of all. But now, with so much practice ….. not bothered at all …….. Here’s number 88 of my lovely sitters.

Cake Porn And Art

28 Oct

I’ve been making cakes for my Open Studio event at Galerie Simpson tomorrow – just finished this gluten-free chocolate and poached pear upside down cake to go with the bara brith (courtesy of Jane Simpson), pineapple upside-down cake and lemon and elderflower drizzle cake.

I’ve been doing some little mashups of my Käthe Kollwitz print and newspaper photos as well as working on my first three-dimensional print construction.

And here it is almost finished. I should have this completed in the next day or two.

A Relaxed Squiggliness

27 Oct

I’m getting through these Baby Boomers at quite a rate now, here’s number 87 out of my target of a hundred. My style changes according to the person I’m drawing. Some people require a certain formality and precision of line, others invite a relaxed squiggliness. I’m sure that my phraseology wouldn’t pass muster in a modern artist statement, but I don’t care 😀

Kollwitz Mashups

26 Oct

mashup-4

I’ve been doing some little mashups with my Käthe Kollwitz stamped prints and some newspaper. They’re stuck onto the windows of Galerie Simpson where I’ve been doing an artist’s residency for the past 3 weeks.

On Saturday I’m having an Open Studio from 10.00 – 16.00 with tea and home-made cakes and the art I’ve been making while I’ve been here. Please pop in 😀

What Am I Up To Now? [7]

25 Oct

stitched-up

Still working on a new piece of art at my residency at Galerie Simpson on Swansea’s High Street. I’m taking my printmaking out of two dimensions into three and it’s certainly been challenging. Today I’ve been sewing paper together on my lovely Edwardian Singer sewing machine and then overstitching my little stamped prints of German artist Käthe Kollwitz, who is a hero of mine.

My residency will be ending this weekend so I’m having an Open Studio on Saturday, 10.00 to 4.00 so that people can pop in and see what I’ve been up to during the past couple of weeks. There will be tea, coffee and lashings of home-made cake as well. Of course 😀

Always Room For Improvement

24 Oct

And another lovely Baby Boomer – I’m on a roll! I set myself the task of drawing 100 Baby boomer, my generation, by the end of this year and here is number 86. I just love doing this, such interesting conversations and faces full of life and experience. It’s developing my drawing skills – there’s always room for improvement. I am using a 4B graphite stick into my spiral bound, hardbacked A4 sketchbook.

Still Learning

23 Oct

downes-d

This is sitter number 85 out of my target of 100 Baby Boomers sketched by the end of this year. I’ve improved so much in my ability to sketch faces quickly and with reasonable accuracy, some more and some less, while retaining my own style. It’s very different to working with professional models and I’m learning so much from it.

Boomtime Again

22 Oct

downes-a

I’m still working on my series of sketches of Baby Boomers, aiming to complete one hundred by the end of this year. This is my 84th sitter and it’s a relief to have done so many now. I love doing these drawings, they are so much more intimate than drawing from photos.
