This is a series of charcoal drawings done during lock down. I’ve been taking my government permitted hour of outdoor exercise most days and on these days I mostly draw. To try to get a sense of the current dark mood I have been using charcoal sticks in a rough-hewn Khadi sketch book. The images have a natural beauty because of the way the sticks mark the paper but they can also make even the most wonderful sunlit landscapes look ominous and brooding. Trees become creatures of the night and the closer you look the more weird they become. I love the way the images convey the often stark beauty of Swansea when seen as a whole but become a luxurious abstract swirl of light and dark when you focus on the details.

Inspired by drawings of the taxidermy collection at Swansea Museum. I have given these antique artefacts a modern twist by combining them with images of rubbish – old fruit nets, bubble wrap and plastic – highlighting the problem of human pollution and how it affects wildlife. 20 percent of the cost of each screenprint sold goes to support Swansea Print Workshop, which receives no public funding.
