Clean, Green And Safe

Khadi Cwmdonkin

Husb and I have gone out for a walk most days since the pandemic lockdown started. We’re not at risk so we can have a government sanctioned hour a day. It’s really made me appreciate how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful city. Swansea is so green with loads of parks, wilded areas and the beach. There was a report a few weeks ago that 1 in 8 British people don’t have access to safe, clean outdoor spaces and of course, they’re the poorest people in society.  This is something that has to be changed once the pandemic is over. Cities can be greened and made safe, there’s no excuse.

I stopped to draw earlier in Cwmdonkin Park, where the poet Dylan Thomas played as a child. There are some wonderful trees; this one might have been a sapling when Dylan played here. I used Winsor & Newton willow charcoal into a Khadi handmade paper sketchbook.

Over here in the “we don’t care anymore” USA, anyone can be outdoors as long as they like, pretty much anywhere they like. I was stunned to see you only get an hour! We had “stay-at-home” orders, but that was just sort of a suggestion, since they let people leave home to do “essential” activities, which could be just about anything. No wonder our infection rates are tracking upwards again! 😥

Oh yes, we had an hour a day exercise plus visits to essential shops and services. Almost all shops were closed, except for food and some other essential items. And people could be – and were – challenged by police to prove their journey was either essential or exercise. Anyone deemed medically vulnerable was contacted by the government and advised to do complete lockdown and local area coordinators and supermarkets were given a list of these people, several million nationwide, to check they were okay and give them priority for things like supermarket delivery slots. I think it worked quite well for a while, but now the lockdown is being eased, we’re starting to see more cases.

Wow! Ev;erything was way more “loosey-goosey” over here! Would’ve appreciated a bit more “obligation” on the part of our citizens, especially in the mask department—

Currently we have a 5 mile restriction on how far we can travel, unless you can prove it’s essential, and we’re allowed to meet one other household, but outside and keeping 2 metres apart.
