I tried something a bit different at life drawing tonight. I’d prepared some small scraps of card with white acrylic gesso and Indian ink before I went to Iceland a few months ago but I didn’t use them all. “Waste not, want not” as my Nana used to say. I started with black and white chinagraph pencils but the effect was too translucent so I switched to black and white conte crayons. Much better. Because they’re quite chunky, I had to ditch my usual fine-line style, but that’s OK, I like to get out of my comfort zone.

I love the bold, graphic qualities…are you sure you’re outside the C zone?
🙂 Yes well outside. It’s very small, about A5 and I usually keep to fine pens for that size. I normally use conte on much larger pieces, so struggled with being unable to do fine detail.
Amazing things can happen when one leaves the comfort zone. I prefer to bring my comfort zone with me where ever I go 🙂

I’m intrigued by the acrylic gesso and Indian Ink – do they mix together? Or did you prepare bits with gesso and bits with ink?
Hi Kate. I used an old bit of pale grey mountboard, scrpaed some white acrylic gesso across with a large hoghair brush and when it was dry, shlepped some black indian ink over at random on a bit of sponge.
