Another life drawing, this time of an older male nude, again drawn onto brown packing paper with conté crayons in black, white and sanguine. The brown paper gives a rich tonal base for a drawing.I like working with older models, their lifetime of experience is reflected in their bodies.
Here’s a slideshow of the different stages of the drawing.

I have a new piece of art in the Womens Arts Association exhibition, opening on Saturday 11th November. Please pop by and take a look if you’re in Cardiff
What’s with the parental guidance warning in the title?
I get problems with the USA so I put a warning on. I was almost thrown off MySpace because I was posting my nudes, even though they’re classical and academic. It can also be a problem with Facebook, although I haven’t been hassled yet, but some artists have. Just erring on the safe side 🙂
Hi Rose
I saw your expiation in another post after I asked – I read your posts backward on Reader. I see your point, but to be honest, the warning shocks me, as if nude is something odd. But the world is strange, as we’ve seen today.
N
Yes, most strange. I had to have permission to use my nudes in a slide show when I did a lecture at a university in the States a couple of years ago, even though all the students were 18+. I’m doing a fair bit of work at the moment with schools here and in the USA so I’m being extra careful. Some artists were thrown off MySpace for posting photos of Michaelangelo’s David – and MySpace was owned by Rupert Murdoch at the time!!!!!
I guess the nude is very contentious. If you show nudes in a non-sexualised way, especially women, especially non conventionally attractive, this is quite challenging. When the figure, especially female, especially young, is sexualised, it is somehow contained, safe, controlled. Its the opposite to how one might think.
Yes, you’re right. I have trouble selling my nudes because I don’t eroticise them. I have a Skype with a school in the USA this afternoon and they are forbidden to show or discuss nudes in art at all, even though they are aged 14 to 18. Extraordinary by European standards.
Strange attitudes and beliefs over there, as we’ve just seen
And those 14-18 year olds will be accessing pornography on their smart phones but can’t discuss the nude in art. No wonder Trump’s behaviour towards women does not seem to have been an issue for people voting.
I’d love to discuss it with them today but it’s not allowed. You’re right about the access to pornography, if they’re not allowed to discuss the issue of how we represent humans through art and culture, there are no balances to the porn they’ll have no trouble at all accessing. Our streets and galleries are full of nudity and most people never even notice.
What a cracking drawing Rosie, the body has such weight, and the foreshortening totally convincing, it’s inspiring!
Thank you so much, Phil. I really appreciate it 😀
