I try and spend a few minutes scribbling each day. If there isn’t a specific topic to interest me, I’ll wander along to the large windows at the east side of our studio block and do some speed sketching at around 4-5pm when people are making their way home. It’s good practice because I have to capture the figures in seconds, focussing on what’s absolutely vital about each individual. You have to think on your feet.

Hi, I liked your approach to drawing. That may not mean much to you, of course, but I have a few suggestions, taken from my experience with artists (and please believe me, I do have that experience to draw upon) that I hope you may find useful. Based on what I saw in your blog, I am sure you can do it.
When drawing strangers in the street, focus on their emotional state. That could be reflected not only in the outline of their silhouette (how the shoulders are slumped or raised, whether the back is rigid or relaxed) but in the way they hold things (i.e. a bag, a bus handle, their umbrella, etc.). THis can also shine though some of the stuff they wear, eg some would wear a slightly old-fashioned hat that is so dear to them that deserves an extra few lines in your drawing. Focus on their personality, and, of couse, it is going to be on a relatively small scale, for you’d have almost no time, but the objective here is to remember and capture those visual atoms. The richer is your collection of these atoms, the easier it would be then to write a big novel )
