On the road again visiting Stonehenge. We have had a look at it from the road a couple of times but did a proper visit today. It was packed with tourists and boiling hot but I could still feel a sense of awe. It’s difficult drawing something so iconic because it’s been done before so many times but you just have to get on with it.
I used to think that the surface texture on the stones was due to weathering or even done by the people who made them. But it turns out that in years gone by, local farmers used to sell hammers to tourists to hack off bits of the stones as souvenirs.

Love the note about the farmers providing tools for souvenir gatherers. Reminds me of Plymouth Rock in the USA. In the 1800’s a hammer was available for tourists to take a bit home.
It’s so shocking now but they were very laissez faire back in the day. They dismantled castles to build cottages and hedge walls…..
Finally following you on here after all your lovely comments to me. Love your work, your style is so expressive.
Aww Thanks:)
I remember it when you could still walk up to it and I visited very early one misty morning.. wish I’d had a camera with me then !
Whoever could have predicted that they’d stop public access? At least they’ve now closed that awful road alongside it.
Yes it’s dreadful
I love this one Rosie! Anything ancient sparks off my imagination, have you been to Orkney? You and Hubby should head up there, lots of drawing opportunities there. Best regards, Russell.
We’ve been thinking about visiting the Scottish Islands, thanks 🙂
I like your style. So it’s good that you drew it again, even if so many others did it before. No matter. Happy weekend!
Thanks 🙂
