This is the last of my scribbles from London. It was a bitterly cold evening and as we were waiting at Paddington train station to come home, I saw this homeless man sitting in front of us, his life packed onto a supermarket trolley, including a walking stick. One of his legs was in plaster and he wore a comedy fake-fur tiger hat. He was a nice man, chatting companiably to people nearby, sometimes dozing and thankfully he wasn’t hassled to move on by station personnel. I don’t know what his story is, but no doubt our present government would say it’s his own fault for being poor.
His Life On A Trolley.

I'm an artist / printmaker / scribbler. I love drawing and all the geeky stuff associated with printmaking, working in a figurative style. I live in Wales with husband and demented cats. And my real name is Rose Davies :D View more posts

Well said Rosie. You should dedicate your sketch to Lee Halpin – a young man (26) from Newcastle, who died recently. He was an aspiring investigative journalist who decided to experience ‘homelessness’ for a week. Sadly, he lasted 3 days before being found dead. No one should be homeless. V.
Thanks V. That’s good idea. I’ll follow that up 🙂
Wonderful drawing Rosie. I feel exactly the same about the homeless as you do. No one actively chooses to be homeless and its to our utter national shame that anyone should have to spend a night outdoors on a park bench or underpass in this awful weather.
This seems to be an entrenched problem. What are we doing wrong? And it’s us, society, not the individuals, who are at fault. We made them what they are.
A distressing sight. Here in the States there’s homeless everywhere, and when not pushing shopping carts, they’re standing on street corners with cardboard signs. sad state of affairs. can’t see how anyone would choose that “life-style”.
This shouldn’t be happening in a ‘civilised’ society. We’re not poor nations, we just have the distribution of wealth all wrong. Oops – now I sound like a Commie Pinko – MI5 will be putting me on a list – like I care lol 😀
Honoring courage and resilience that the homeless must have in spades – it is a lovely sketch thanks for sharing
It’s so sad. People don’t stop and listen. I’m passionate about artists giving people a voice.
sometimes it is the intermediary act of allowing others to listen
That’s the beauty of art 🙂
Who knows, but their present policies will make more people in the same position. An honouring sketch I feel.
Thank you, current policies are going to push so many more people into insecure housing.
