We went to a Kate Bush themed birthday party yesterday and our friend, who is a strapping bloke, dressed as Kate in mahoosive wig. Fair do’s.Drawn into my A5 clothbound sketchbook with Faber Castell Pitt pens sizes F and B.
And today, I picked the first of the new season’s rhubarb from the garden and made Husb’s all time favourite, rhubarb crumble. With lashings of custard, of course.

mmmmmm rhubarb! Love the sketch.
Thank you 😀
Nice one Rosie! Crumble looks good 🙂
Thanks Russell. Do you have rhubarb in your neck of the woods?
Yes, we planted a patch only last winter, so we left it alone. But this summer we’ll be able to pick. No signs of life so far though. Russell.
We have a very good microclimate here so it’s quite early. And the farmyard manure through the winter helps 🙂
Haven’t had rhubarb crumble for ages. Used to have it a lot when I was a kid – sometimes with apple in it as well.
Husb can’t get enough of it. Luckily it does well in the garden
Was the party going to have a Kate Bush theme before the concerts announcement?
Yes, he’s a big fan.
Lovely sketch.
Eyed up my rhubarb today – planted last winter so I have been waiting over a year now and not had any yet… A sneaky one was trying to flower too, which I have in a glass of water now as an alternative flower arrangement!
I’ve never had one flower, is that what you do?
yes, you have to cut them off as soon as you spot them as otherwise the plant puts all it’s energy into flowering and stops making the leaves. I did know this already but on the site I looked at just to check (before i went out armed with sharp knife), it said that usually only big plants from about their 3rd year start to flower. Well I had one do it last spring, about 3 months after it was planted! Does depend on the variety, I think… Very odd looking things when they first start to come up, like broccoli popping out of a large onion skin!
Thanks, I’ll look out for it 🙂
ooh thanks for the warning
I love rhubarb crumble too.
First of the season was delicious
