Today I dropped off some new work to the wonderful Workers Gallery in Ynyshir in the Rhondda Valley. Husb and I drove up over Aberdare and Maerdy and stopped to take some photos of the rugged scenery in the late Autumn light. Wonderful place.
The new exhibition, ‘Of Site And Song’ opens on November the 5th and runs until December the 23rd. It would be lovely for people to make a little trip up to this lovely gallery and to take in the amazing landscape as well.

The area is very beautiful, but terribly deprived. Nature has reclaimed it after the heavy industry and mining. The communities are finally recovering from the blow of losing the mining industry and are tentatively gaining in confidence. The survival and success of The Workers Gallery so far is a fantastic achievement 😀
I agree but I mourn the loss of libraries. There seems to be a retrenchment against community facilities, free at the point of need. But how do the local people see this, I wonder. Still it’s great that the library is now used as community art space.
Yes, the library is missed but the community is rallying around the gallery. It isn’t one of those excluding ones and there is a growing sense of community action too. A recently closed museum is about to reopen, taken over by the community, it will be run as a trust.
Artists from across the area have contributed books for a cultural reading area, which is well used and many community groups are now using the space for lectures and events, like local history and stuff like that. It’s taken over some of the role of being the hub of the community.
