I recently sketched a friend as he walked around the Rosehill Quarry labyrinth. I drew into a small (A6) Indigo sketchbook on very rough, heavyweight paper that I had previously prepared with white gesso and turquoise Liquitex acrylic ink. The surface is so rough that pens and pencils just didn’t cut it, so I used Caran D’Ache NeoPastels which gave a very interesting texture on the heavy surface of the paper. The pastels don’t lend themselves to fine detail on such a small scale which was OK because I was working very quickly and could only focus on shapes and colours anyway.
I have an exhibition of (mostly) new work, “Carved Heads And Other Creatures”, part of MANIFEST at The Workers Gallery in Ynyshir. The show runs until October 31st. Open Saturdays 10.00 – 17.00, other times by appointment.
