Had a quick scribble when my young nephew called around the other day. He was lolling on the little settee and there was a nice bit of foreshortening going on, so I sketched him. The word “lolling” means to lounge and the Internet reckons it originates in late Middle English. But there’s also a Welsh word “(y) lolfa” which means “(the) lounge”. I wonder if one came from the other language or if they both originated somewhere else completely?
Lolling ….

I'm an artist / printmaker / scribbler. I love drawing and all the geeky stuff associated with printmaking, working in a figurative style. I live in Wales with husband and demented cats. And my real name is Rose Davies :D View more posts

I love words. Fun to hear about their origins. I was just writing a post about the color gray — or grey. I had to look it up to find out which one is ours and which is yours. Thought for God and country I had better spell it in American… But in truth, I see the two words as different colors!
Love your drawing. Must have been fun drawing your young relative. How lovely. Company and art make a fine combination.
I always think of Gray as a surname and grey as a colour. Bit of trivia – the name Lloyd is Welsh for grey 🙂
For some reason, in my head, gray is warm and grey is cool.
That’s a nice way of looking at it
