I’m working from pictures of Renaissance angel sculptures, which is very different to the Byzantine icons I was working from last week. These sculptures are far more realistic and there’s a lot of detail in how the wings join to the body, which I find really interesting. There’s a whole load of stuff on the Internet about the anatomy of angels – apparently they defy the laws of physics, but then again, they’re angels. I used a charcoal pencil, my home-made walnut ink, Liquitex white ink and Escoda brushes onto recycled print paper coated with acrylic screenprint ink.

I’m doing an artist residency in Urban HQ, 37 Orchard St, Swansea SA1 5AJ throughout November, developing ideas on the theme of Angels. Please drop by if you’re in the city, there’s a lovely café there too.
