Going For It!

The Crowd Going For It.

Husb and I went to The Elysium last night to watch a live band. They got the crowd going! A covers band, Soulskunks, mainly ska and a bit of reggae. I had to have a scribble of course. People were dancing fast so it was a bit of a challenge.

#Caturday Archives

Scooter, my friend’s cat.

It’s Saturday so it’s #Caturday on many social media platforms. I’ve got cat sketches going back years and years so I thought I’d dig them out and do a regular Saturday / Caturday archive. The scribbles above are of my friend’s late kitty, Scooter, and below is mine and Husb’s late legend Ming The Merciless.

Sunning In The Park.

Three Sun Lovers On A Bench.

Husb and I went to Mumbles this evening, for the opening of a new exhibition at Tides Gallery. It was lovely, it spilt out into the Ponderosa Bar next door and Elwyn’s Bar just along the street. Then it spilt out across the road to the little park where Ian Thomas played an acoustic set. I spotted these three women sunning themselves in the gentle evening heat and had a quick scribble. Has to be done.

More Mandala

Working Through Colour Theory.

Carried on today painting a mandala incorporating classic colour theory. I remember we had to study Johannes Itten’s colour theory book when I did an Art Foundation course way back when. Coincidentally, Itten was one of the founders of Art Foundation courses, when he was a lecturer at The Bauhaus. I’m developing this from a colour wheel, incorporating Primary, Secondary and Tertiary colours, tints and shades, and complementary colours. Today, I also started to add translucent glazes to some of the colour blocks, to vary the tone and texture. Quite a way to go, though, before it’s finished.

Playing Around.

Charcoal Drawing Through Gradient Map.

I take my art very seriously and I rarely relax and play around with it. I’m trying to be a bit freer, so this evening I had a play with a charcoal drawing I did way back in early lockdown – seems like so long ago now. I uploaded the drawing into Adobe Photoshop and messed around a bit. First I put it into Gradient Map and flicked through the options until I decided on this one (above).

Gradient Map Through Cutout.

Then I put the Gradient Map image through the filter gallery and settled on this one in Cutout. It’s pretty far removed from the original but it’s FUN. I almost certainly would not have drawn – or painted – something like this and Photoshop did it in a few minutes. Mind you, it took me a lot of effort to learn Photoshop in the first place. Here’s the original (below) of the sunflower fields in Rhossili.

Prepping And Perspiration!

Setting Up My Workstation.

Crikey! This heatwave is getting a bit much. It’s cooler in the house than outside so I’ve been a bit like a cave-dwelling troll today, avoiding the intense sunshine outside. Still sweated cobs though.

I did a load of prep for screenprinting. I put some designs onto screens with Speedball drawing fluid and got them ready for printing by masking the edge of the design with Scotch brown parcel tape. I cut my paper down from A3 to A4 and got everything else ready to go. I think I’ll wait a few days though, for the weather to cool off a bit.

#StandingStoneSunday 1.

Twlc Y Filiast.

There’s such a thing as Standing Stone Sunday over on Twitter so I’m posting a drawing and video from my travels with pre-historian Dewi Bowen and filmmaker Melvyn Williams a few years back. We tracked many of the Neolithic and Bronze Age standing stones across South Wales as Dewi was researching for his new book – out soon!!!!

In the video, which shows many of the stones, I talk about how I feel they are examples of monumental art in the landscape and how they inspire me. It’s only a few minutes, fancy a gander?

Scribbling In A Heatwave.

Park Ping Pong.

Husb and I ventured out into the blistering heat later this afternoon, strolled into town and called into the cafe by the new park for a cool drink. There was a family playing ping pong so I had a quick scribble en plein air. Very quick, just enough to sketch out the basic components of the scene using the continuous line technique. Then I had some fun with mark-making, adding some texture and shading to break the scene up into it’s main ‘blocks’.

Ancient Fast Food Outlets Up A Mountain (with short video).

A Capstone At Mynydd Llangyndeyrn.

I’ve been looking though my YouTube channel and remembered the day I went up Mynydd Llangyndeyrn, a mountain with ancient stones, in Carmarthenshire. I was travelling around Wales with pre-historian, wit and raconteur Dewi Bowen and filmmaker Melvyn Williams. Dewi was doing field research for his new book, Melvyn was filming him and I decided to tag along and draw. This was near the beginning of our travels together, which eventually lasted three years.

Here’s a short (3 minute) film where Dewi explains how these prehistoric stones became fast-food outlets for ancient hunters and I get some drawing done.

The Irrepressible Dewi Bowen.

Dewi’s new book will be published soon, in the meanwhile, why not check out his previous book on Ancient Siluria and it’s standing stones here.

Scribbling The Music #2

High Speed Scribbling.

Here’s another speedy sketch I did at the Windshake gig at Elysium last weekend. The lead singer is very fast moving so I had to scribble quickly. Really fab band, loved the gig.
