The F. C. B.

8 May

FCB 1

For people from outside Britain, an F. C. B. stands for a Full Cooked Breakfast. In England, it’s a gigantic platter of sausage, bacon and eggs, supplemented by a variety of delicacies like fried potatoes, fried tomatoes, baked beans and black pudding (made with blood). The addition of cockles (like clams) and laverbread (seaweed) turns it into a Welsh F. C. B.

Husb and I went to our local Greasy Spoon caff earlier to meet up with some friends for a consolatory F.C.B. to cheer ourselves up after the UK election results. We stuffed ourselves and I took the opportunity to scribble some of the other punters. One of them was a little old lady who was wearing a typical little old ladies woolly hat. At least, it’s typical for these parts. We don’t have the best weather in the world, y’know. Anyway, we consoled ourselves with our grub and have spent the rest of the day in each other’s company, valuing one of the things that matters most in life, friendship.

Went up to The ‘Diff today to visit the excellent artspace, g39 just off City Road, a bustling part of the capital. Husb and I had a walk around the area, it was freezing and we found a proper old-fashioned greasy spoon caff where we indulged ourselves with bacon and egg baps and hot, strong black coffee. Lush. It was full of regulars and I scribbled these two chatting over the racing papers. I used the continuous line technique with a Faber Castell Pitt drawing pen, size F into my A5 Tate Gallery sketchbook.

Husb and I were up and about early on Sunday, helping to hang my latest exhibition, Rinascere, at The Brunswick. It opens this evening, with lashings of cake, from 7.30 pm so if you’re passing, please call in. I’m exhibiting with two other artists, Patricia McParlin and Aled Rhys Hughes and the exhibition continues until November 30th.

After we’d hung the work, Husb and I felt the need for a Full Cooked Breakfast so off we went to the local greasy spoon caff and had their finest FCB, with extra black pudding on the side. nom nom nom. I had time for a quick scribble and spotted this chap in the corner, tucking into his FCB and sporting some splendid tattoos. Then my enormous breakfast arrived and I lost interest in him. I need to diet for a week to work it off though 🙂

Here’s one of my little solar plate etchings from the Rinascere exhibition…..
