Getting some colour down at Swansea Fringe last weekend – has it been a week already? I was rocking out to Sons of Thunder (at Hangar 18) and literally HITTING the paper with my Inktense blocks. Then I hit the paper with my reservoir brush, dribbling the water all over the place. Sometimes the imageContinue reading “Hitting And Dribbling.”

Groovy Paisley Shirt.
Sometimes when I’m sketching at gigs, I look for interesting things going on around the figure I’m drawing. This musician with the band “Strange Orchid” had a groovy Paisley shirt and was performing in front of Philip Cheater‘s artwork in Elysium. I drew the head with a graphite block and used Inktense blocks and aContinue reading “Groovy Paisley Shirt.”
Heavy Rock Legs.
When I sketch at gigs, I don’t just want to draw the bands. They’re often moving so fast that it gets a bit frantic so to cool off a bit, I draw the audience. Sometimes it’s fun to draw heads, sometimes legs. This is a leg sketch. It’s good practice to get that foreshortening onContinue reading “Heavy Rock Legs.”
The Psychedelic T-Shirt.
I was sketching at Hippos on Swansea’s High Street on Friday, part of the Swansea Fringe, and I spotted this fabulous t-shirt on one of the musicians in King Goon. I scribbled with a ballpoint pen and Inktense blocks.
The Enthusiastic Rocker.
I was sketching at Swansea Fringe this last weekend, and I spotted this guy in the audience at the rock gig at Hangar 18. He was loving it (so was I) and I had a quick scribble.
A Year Gone Already?!
Suddenly a year has gone by and the Swansea Fringe is upon us again! I’ve been sketching last night and this at some of the Rock venues. I’m tired now! All rocked out! More to come…
Sketchbook Archives 14: The Hospital Visits.
2012 was a year of hospital visits with several very poorly elderly relatives. It was a chance to sit quietly and sketch. I met some great people on the ward, their faces full of character and experience. The drawing at bottom left is my young great-niece who was fascinated by the murmuration of starlings thatContinue reading “Sketchbook Archives 14: The Hospital Visits.”
Sketchbook Archives 13: They Don’t Stay Little!
Out and about, people watching and scribbling them into my sketchbook, from August 2012, about a year after I started this blog. They’re all drawings of Husb and family, and all the children are grown up now. They don’t stay little for long.
Sketchbook Archives: 12
Buildings from the past, sketchbook drawings from July 2012, about a year after I started this blog. I used to do a lot more sketching en plein air, but that was before the Covid lockdowns. I’ve never really got back to that level since, I find I’m much less likely to go out and aboutContinue reading “Sketchbook Archives: 12”
A year ago, Husb and I took a short break in North Wales, near Eryri (Snowdon). It poured down! But I did some expressionistic drawings with soft pastels into my Daler Rowney black paper sketchbook, you can see one in the background (above). Click here to see a short film about it. I worked veryContinue reading
