A Tea And Cake Party

25 Jun

Jay 1949

And here’s the third of the cohort of lifelong friends and Baby Boomers who came to Swansea for me to draw them over the weekend. Thanks to them I’ve almost finished drawing one hundred Baby Boomers. It’s taken over three years so far but I hope to draw number one hundred in July and then we’ll have a great big tea and cake party! Which is perhaps a bit tame considering the lifestyles most of us had in our youth (and some are still having today) but hey ho, we’re all getting on a bit and to be honest, a nice cup of tea is my limit these days. And once the tea party is over, I’ll have to think about what to do next. I’ve had some deep conversations with most of my Boomers which have created a rich pattern of experiences and images that I think could inspire some very interesting work and possibly a new direction artistically. But first I have to draw number one hundred! There are two contenders. Which one can I get to first?

The Generations

24 Jun

Linda 1949

Carrying on with my self-imposed task to meet with, chat to and draw one hundred Baby Boomers, I was lucky enough to ‘capture’ three in one go yesterday, three lifelong friends at the upper end of the Baby Boom, a research term that covers those born between 1946 and 1964.

The other generations are:

  • The Silents, or alternately The Traditionalists (I prefer The Silents, it’s like something from Doctor Who), born 1945 and before,
  • Generation X, 1965 to 1976,
  • The Millennials, 1977 to 1995,
  • The Centennials, born from 1996

According to researchers, generations share similar characteristics because they had similar experiences at more or less the same stage in life.

Nearly There

23 Jun

Just over three years ago I decided to draw one hundred people from my generation, the Baby Boomers. “It’ll be over by Xmas” I thought. Famous last words, But I’m nearly there and today drew number ninety seven. Oh yes!!!

Kathryn 1949

It’s a big demographic, starting in 1946 and continuing through to 1964, which is a big gap, not just in terms of age but also life experience and culture too. It’s been fascinating listening to people talk about their lives.

Number 96

Voogd V 96

Almost three years ago, I decided to draw one hundred, thirty-minute sketches of Baby Boomers, people of my generation. I thought it would take me about a year. Wrong! Funny how life gets in the way. I did most of them in 2 years but got stuck on the last handful; it has been so hard to find mutually convenient times. So today I was delighted to draw Number 96! This is a fellow artist visiting from the USA, who is staying with friends nearby. She’s the right age and willing, so I paid her a visit, with home made cake (a jam and buttercream sponge, with home-made loganberry jam – home grown loganberries too) and had a chat about her life experience as a Baby Boomer and then drew her. It was interesting to talk with someone from a different culture because although we are the same generation, much of our experience has been very different.

Baby Boomers are the generation born between 1946 and 1964, a big bump working its way through time.  Eventually, I’m planning an installation featuring all the drawings I’ve done, but that’s a long way off yet. First of all, I have to get the last 4 Boomers into a room and draw them.

Number 94

Griffiths I

With the best will in the world, sometimes life just gets in the way of all your plans. I started drawing 30-minute sketches of Baby Boomers almost two years ago with the intention of finishing one hundred by the end of 2016, but I didn’t quite manage it because, well, like I said, life got in the way. But I’m on the case again and here is Number 94, an urbane and creative Boomer with fabulous taste in hats. I’ve drawn three Boomers in this series with hats, all male and all sculptors.

Last week was the opening of Swansea’s International Women’s Day exhibition at Cinema & Co. It was fantastic, loads of people there and lots of arty and fun things happening. Cinema & Co is putting on a terrific programme of films through the month because it’s also Women’s History Month. Please check out the programme here …..

I have put my series of drawings of ancient Welsh monuments on Artfinder.  If you want to see more, please click on the image below or the Artfinder link at the top right of this page.

Grist To The Mill

2 Nov

And here’s Baby Boomer number 92 out of the 100 I plan to sketch by the end of this year. I drew my first back in April 2015, thinking it would just take me a few months, but life (work) got in the way and I didn’t realise the amount of organising that would be needed and how time consuming that has been. A lot of an artist’s time is spent in administrative and organisational tasks. It’s all grist to the mill though.

And Yet Another Beautiful Boomer

13 Oct

And it’s getting difficult to find titles for my Baby Boomer blogs now that I’ve reached number 83 – I think I’ve done every permutation on Baby Boomer that there is! I’m so loving doing these sketches and having conversations with my sitters, discourses that will eventually feed into the final work, which I hope will be on a HUGE scale. But that’s a while off yet.

Another Beautiful Boomer

12 Oct

As I scrutinise the faces of my sitters, all Baby Boomers, all born between 1946 and 1964, it’s obvious that beauty shines through from within, it’s not something that sits on the surface of the skin. It’s a shame that cosmetic surgery is so popular because it’s the life that is lived and reflected upon a face that gives a person beauty, not the surgeon’s knife. This beautiful Boomer is number 82 out of the 100 I intend to draw by the end of the year.

Beautiful Boomer

11 Oct

I’ve been working at the lovely Galerie Simpson on Swansea’s High Street today, drawing more Baby Boomers. I’ve now drawn over 80 and I’m enjoying the sketching and conversations. Now that I’m on the home run, I realise how much I’m going to miss these when I reach number hundred. Here’s another beautiful Boomer.

Baby Boomer number 80 from the one hundred I plan to draw by the end of this year! I’m getting excited at the prospect of finishing the sketches and planning what to do with them, how to develop the next stage. It’s been wonderful talking as well as drawing. I’m reconnecting with many people from years ago, as well as meeting new ones and working with friends, colleagues and relatives.

I’m also continuing my “en plein air” journey of discovery with prehistorian  Dewi Bowen  and filmmaker Melvyn Williams as we travel along the route of the legendary Boar Hunt, Y Twrch Trwyth, from the story of Culhwch and Olwen in the Mabinogion, the book of Welsh mythology, researching, filming and drawing the ancient stone monuments along the way.
