Just back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop (I took a Victoria Sandwich for tea break) and I concentrated on this one long pose. It’s on an A3 canvas sheet, prepared with scribbly oil bar in yellow ochre. I drew with carbon and white oil pastel. It was a nice pose but difficult withContinue reading “Overworked”

Prelims
Just got back from life drawing group at Swansea Print Workshop. I tried something different this week. I worked onto an A3 sheet of canvas that I’d prepared with a rhodamine red oil wash. I drew in charcoal and oil bars (black, white and translucent) but it was very difficult to do any detail onContinue reading “Prelims”
Comfort Food
Second day of Spring and what am I cooking for tea? Casserole and rice pudding. Proper Winter fodder because of the torrential rain, gale force winds and freezing temperature outside. No chance of a nice light salad for some time to come. Here’s another sketch I did last night at the life drawing group. ItContinue reading “Comfort Food”
More Manky Woman Artist #MWA
To carry on with yesterday’s theme of Manky Women artists, here are the steps to making a manier noir drawing which is deliciously grubby. I started by stretching large pieces of Fabriano 240gsm paper onto a wall, soaking them lightly. When they were dry I gave them 2 coats of acrylic gesso, leaving them toContinue reading “More Manky Woman Artist #MWA”
A Bit Different
I tried something a bit different at life drawing tonight. I’d prepared some small scraps of card with white acrylic gesso and Indian ink before I went to Iceland a few months ago but I didn’t use them all. “Waste not, want not” as my Nana used to say. I started with black and whiteContinue reading “A Bit Different”
An Older Man (male nude)
I like to draw older models because it’s interesting to see how anatomy changes with age. When I’m drawing, I often make mistakes and do a few sketches until I get it reasonably right. Here’s the first attempt (above) with notes about what’s wrong with it. I had another go and was happy with theContinue reading “An Older Man (male nude)”
Back To Life
Back to the first life drawing session of the New Year at Swansea Print Workshop this evening. I’m definitely rusty after a fortnight’s break. Our model managed to hold this post for an hour – marvellous. I used a Pentel V5 pen into an A5 spiral-bound Bockingford watercolour pad, with a Derwent watercolour pencil toContinue reading “Back To Life”
Strop!!!
I’m carrying on with woodcuts for a while, hacking away at lumps of plywood all day at the studio. It’s important to keep my cutting tools sharp; if I keep hacking when they get blunt, it hurts my wrist. I use a leather slipstrop and a bar of waxy abrasive to keep them sharp.Continue reading “Strop!!!”
Keep At It
The only way to get good at anything is to keep at it and practice. I know that’s stating the bleedin’ obvious but so many people don’t seem to get it. Here are some of the life drawings I did last week. I did these four, which are a bit naff and one IContinue reading “Keep At It”
I Got More Wood…
I’ve been hacking away at my lump of old plywood today. I darkened the outline drawing I did yesterday with a greasy charcoaly thing from Daler Rowney – I should be more technical I know, but I lost the box it came in – and then I hacked the white bits out of it.Continue reading “I Got More Wood…”
