Finished The Cat

sparta final

Finished the cat picture. It’s gone into my window. I live in a very diverse area and one of my neighbouring houses is a care in the community home for adults with mental health issues. We stop and chat often and they have been really chuffed with the art that Husb and I have been putting into the window, mostly temporarily, so we decided to do some permanent pieces, related in some way to The Pandemic. Husb is still working on his. These long thin Winsor & Newton canvas panels are a good fit for our front windows and they can be seen from the street.

Knowing when to finish is always an issue with any artwork, I think. I don’t particularly like paintings that are very polished, I like to see something of the process that’s gone into the work; the bits where the paint has been scuffed onto the canvas; the white bits showing through; the brushstrokes that dragged; the drips. I enjoyed playing with the interactions between opaque and translucent paint (Liquitex heavy body acrylics), layering randomly and using up the dregs off the pallette. I also like to leave something for the viewer to fill in or interpret or get absorbed in. It’s a two-way thing.

I showed Sparta Puss. She was not impressed.
