It’s #StandingStoneSunday again on social media and here’s one in a field near Pontyberem in Carmarthenshire. Click here to read more about this magnificent monuent. I drew it on my adventures with pre-historian Dewi Bowen and filmmaker Melvyn Williams a few years back, in the days before the Covid lockdown. All the megaliths on our travels are connected to theContinue reading “#StandingStoneSunday 13”

Swansea Fringe 10: The Red Drummer.

This guy had everything – tattoos, drums and red hair. Great to draw. Not easy though, because he’s a vigorous drummer and his arms were a blur most of the time. That’s a challenge for me, do I capture a split second in time, as I have here or do I use some technique toContinue reading “Swansea Fringe 10: The Red Drummer.”

Mess Everywhere

I love my job. I work for a national charity teaching art to adults. Today was my turn to be taught when one of my students demonstrated how to do an acrylic paint pour. What a mess! I managed to drop the pot of black paint and it went everywhere – including up both myContinue reading “Mess Everywhere”

Squint And Scribble.

Here’s a second sketch I made at the Filia 2022 conference yesterday. I was drawing women on the stage a long way away so I had to squint a lot and I couldn’t see much detail. I used ballpoint pen and then added colour washes with Derwent Inktense blocks and a water reservoir brush. ThisContinue reading “Squint And Scribble.”

Scribbling In Paint.

I’m working on a new portrait of my great-niece. She’s got attitude. I did the preliminary sketch a couple of weeks ago (here). I found a canvas with a failed painting on it and covered it in a thin layer of magenta Liquitex Heavy Body acrylic paint, letting some of the discarded painting come through.Continue reading “Scribbling In Paint.”

#StandingStoneSunday 9

It’s #StandingStoneSunday again and here’s another of the glorious monuments I drew while I was out and about with pre-historian Dewi Bowen and film maker Melvyn Williams, hunting Welsh megaliths. This day, we stayed close to home and started out by visiting the local Dylan Thomas comprehensive school, where there is a fine Bronze Age standingContinue reading “#StandingStoneSunday 9”

Another Start….

A few days ago, I recycled some paintings I didn’t like, and today I used one to start a new painting. The surface is very sculptural now and I scraped two layers of paint on, the first coat in cadmium orange and the second in mars black (Liquitex Heavy Body acrylic). I’m working from oneContinue reading “Another Start….”

#StandingStoneSunday 8

This week’s #StandingStoneSunday megalith is the Is-coed stone near Ferryside in Carmarthenshire. I was travelling around drawing Bronze Age and Neolithic monuments with filmmaker Melvyn Williams and pre-historian Dewi Bowen a while back, drawing the sites that will feature in Dewi’s upcoming book based on the tale of Y Twrch Trwyth in the Mabinogion.
