The Same Thing Every Year!

15 Apr

herstory

It’s the same every year on our allotment (community garden). Husb and I resolve to do the correct thing and work on it for an hour, then two, then three and so on, building up the muscles that have atrophied over the deluge that passes for the British winter. Unfortunately, the deluge keeps on happening in this little corner of Wales and so whenever there’s a rare glimmer of sunshine, we rush down to the allotment and work for as long and as hard as we can to keep on top of the couch grass and weeds that thrive in our temperate wet climate. Yesterday was one of those days. We went down in the morning to do a “couple of hours” but ended up working through nearly seven hours of hard labour. It felt great at the time but today….!!!! I’d be on my knees if I could bend down, which I can’t.

This afternoon was the launch of a group exhibition that I have some work in, at The Welfare in Ystradgynlais. Here I am with “Herstory”, the collaborative piece I did for International Women’s Day with graffiti artist Unity. I think I’m making a good job of disguising the fact that every muscle in my body (so it seems) has seized up! Oh, and it poured with rain. Again.

My Part In Her Story

5 Mar

Herstory my part

I’ve been teasing you with snippets of a collaboration I’ve been working on with graffiti artist, Unity. We talked around some ideas and came up with the subject of Herstory to develop something for the International Women’s Day exhibition at Swansea’s Cinema & Co. We made a list of women who inspire our creativity and I researched them to come up with some visuals. Unity started the ball rolling by drawing the lettering and spraying the first layer of paint onto a large canvas and then it came over to me – Unity lives in the next city.

I had gone through a few different approaches to the images of these women – collaging, painting, screenprinting, but I finally decided to scribble them, well I would, wouldn’t I? I used mostly sanguine conté crayon with a little white here and there for highlights. I wanted them to emerge softly from the background rather than dominate the picture, because that’s how inspiration works for me. And now it’s gone back to Unity to finish. I’m really excited, I don’t know what to expect!

International Women’s Day at Cinema & Co, Swansea, March 8th, 18.00 – 20.30 – or later if we’re still rocking the bar! With 30 artists plus film, performance, music and a Pakistani pop-up kitchen. And Cake!

Stretching My Creativity

Simone

It’s International Women’s Day in just under a week and I’m collaborating with the artist Unity on a new piece for the exhibition at Swansea’s Cinema & Co. The concept is based on those women who have influenced us creatively. The finished piece will be 1.5 x 1 metres and on canvas, which I’m not used to working on. I’ve been using conté crayons over the spray painted base laid down by Unity originally. We’re both pretty excited by our collaboration, it’s not something I normally do but it’s stretching my creativity and I think I’ll be up for more in future.

Something that’s gestating, something that’s a collaboration with the artist Unity, something that will be revealed on International Women’s Day ……..

A Face Emerges….

Claudel

Here’s another snippet of the new artwork, a collaboration with graffiti artist Unity (Amelia Thomas). We’re doing it for the International Women’s Day exhibition in Swansea, opening on March the 8th at Cinema & Co. This image is based on a screen print I did of the French Impressionist sculptor, Camille Claudel……

Sanguine

This is another bit of a large canvas I’m working on at the moment, a collaboration with fellow artist Unity aka Millimagic. Unity has worked on the canvas with spray paint and pen, developing a typographical structure and background texture. I’ve started to draw in some imagery with sanguine conté crayon.  The finished piece will be launched at a new exhibition to celebrate International Women’s Day in Cinema & Co in Swansea on March the 12th.

Chalk And Cheese

I’m collaborating with fellow artist Unity aka Millimagic who works with graffiti style forms, influenced by hip hop culture. I have rarely collaborated on an artwork in the past and this, along with Unity’s cultural influences are new to me. Musically I’m a rock chick and I’d describe my style of art as fairly traditional, so we’re a bit like chalk and cheese. Here’s a little glimpse of something we’re working on for International Women’s Day. It will be launched at a new exhibition in Cinema & Co in Swansea on March the 12th. Watch this space ……
