I focused on the model’s hands at the life drawing session at Swansea Print Workshop a few evenings ago. I blocked in the white first, then sanguine and finally black with conté crayons. It didn’t go too well so I tried again…….. but that’s for tomorrow …….

A Quick Head
A quick portrait sketch from last evening’s life drawing session at Swansea Print Workshop. I used white, sanguine and black conté crayons (in that order) into my brown paper sketchbook. It took about 15 minutes. I love to work with life models, it’s so absorbing to be able to focus and take myContinue reading “A Quick Head”
Beautiful Boomer
I’ve been working at the lovely Galerie Simpson on Swansea’s High Street today, drawing more Baby Boomers. I’ve now drawn over 80 and I’m enjoying the sketching and conversations. Now that I’m on the home run, I realise how much I’m going to miss these when I reach number hundred. Here’s another beautiful Boomer. There’sContinue reading “Beautiful Boomer”
The Replacements
And another lovely Baby Boomer, willing to sit for a thirty minute portrait sketch. It’s not easy to sit still and silent and have someone staring hard at you but it’s so interesting for me to be spending this time sketching and drawing. This is turning into so much more than a drawing project. I’mContinue reading “The Replacements”
Building A Head
I worked on a portrait drawing during one of the poses at life drawing session the other evening, using compressed charcoal and white soft pastel onto brown paper. I like using tinted paper as the mid-tones are a given and I find it easier to work in highlights and lowlights on top of an existingContinue reading “Building A Head”
Immense Character
I’ve come to the last of my Baby Boomer drawings for a little while as The SPace, where I have been doing these drawings since November, has now closed at the end of its temporary lease. I need to find a new place to continue the drawings over the next few months. This Baby BoomerContinue reading “Immense Character”
A Face Of Distinction
Another Baby Boomer sketch and I’m coming to the end of this phase of drawings, with around 40 completed. I’ve been doing them at The SPace in Swansea’s High Street but it’s now closed as our temporary 12 week lease is up, so I’m going to have to find another venue to continue my sketches.Continue reading “A Face Of Distinction”
Flowing Locks
This is the first profile I’ve drawn in my series of 30 minute sketches of my generation. I generally start out sitting opposite the people who come and pose for me and let people decide for themselves how they’re comfortable and then draw them. This is the first man I’ve drawn with really long hair,Continue reading “Flowing Locks”
The Glamour
Continuing with my series of drawings of Baby Boomers, my latest model is at the top end of the demographic and is now aged 70. I have known her for over 40 years and she is still probably the most glamorous woman I know, always beautifully dressed and groomed, the sort of person who makesContinue reading “The Glamour”
Back At Me
Another Baby Boomer with wild curly hair this morning and also another artist who drew me right on back. I decide what drawing materials to use when I sit down to draw. Some people are suited to drawing pens (Faber Castell Pitt) and some to graphite (I use a variety in stick form). Graphite seemed bestContinue reading “Back At Me”
