It’s been a long day, ending with a talk at Swansea Print Workshop this evening. I took my sketchbook to do some scribbles for my blog but I was really tired and my sketches are pretty scrappy. But there you go; sometimes it’s like that. You can’t always get what you want.

Berries And Ruins
Swansea Print Workshop has a major exhibition coming up for its members, based on the theme of the industrial valley. Swansea and South Wales were in the forefront of the Industrial Revolution and the area is full of historical ruins. I went out sketching to the Lower Swansea Valley a couple of days ago; theContinue reading “Berries And Ruins”
Man On Floor
Does what it says on the tin. A man. On the floor. Just got back from life drawing group this evening, at Swansea Print Workshop, and had a terrific pose to draw, with difficult angles, perspective and foreshortening. Lovely. I’m a bit of a masochistic scribbler. The workshop has strong spotlights that give good chiaroscuroContinue reading “Man On Floor”
Black To White
Had a day at Swansea Print Workshop, working with a group of other artists during Open Access sessions. The organisation receives very little public funding and is mostly run by it’s member / volunteers, so I spent quite a bit of my time there today on the sort of admin tasks that are frustratingly uncreative,Continue reading “Black To White”
Overworked
Just back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop (I took a Victoria Sandwich for tea break) and I concentrated on this one long pose. It’s on an A3 canvas sheet, prepared with scribbly oil bar in yellow ochre. I drew with carbon and white oil pastel. It was a nice pose but difficult withContinue reading “Overworked”
The Curate’s Egg
Just got back from this evening’s life drawing session at Swansea Print Workshop, which was a bit of a curate’s egg….good in parts. I loosened up with my first drawing, using white conte crayon and a lump of carbon onto a piece of handmade paper that I’d prepared with a dark ink wash. I likeContinue reading “The Curate’s Egg”
Keep At It
Just back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop. I did five drawings over 2 hours and each one was better than the last. It’s not unusual to be a bit rusty at the beginning, but you’ve got to keep at it and not get demoralised. Below are the first four drawings and above theContinue reading “Keep At It”
Industrial Scribbling
Sunshine all day – yaayyy Summer at last. ‘The Industrial Valley’ is the theme for an exhibition coming up in the Autumn for members of Swansea Print Workshop. Some of us are organising a series of drawing days to do preliminary studies for this and today a small group of printmakers went up the DulaisContinue reading “Industrial Scribbling”
An Inky Threesome
Had a hard day at Swansea Print Workshop today. It was very busy with 6 printmakers working flat out. I was working with Gayle and Chris developing some 3-colour reduction monotypes. I wanted to get in a bit of portraiture practice, working directly from a simple black and white drawing, while the other two wantedContinue reading “An Inky Threesome”
Prelims
Just got back from life drawing group at Swansea Print Workshop. I tried something different this week. I worked onto an A3 sheet of canvas that I’d prepared with a rhodamine red oil wash. I drew in charcoal and oil bars (black, white and translucent) but it was very difficult to do any detail onContinue reading “Prelims”
