A Happy Accident

26 Jan

Exhibition: “Female Expressions”, Saturday 2nd – Saturday 23rd February. Queen Street Gallery, Neath.

This is an etching of mine called “Ripples” made from an original life drawing, working with a professional model. It’s part of a series of etchings of the nude which I called “Rinascere” which relates to the word Renaissance because I based the etchings on Renaissance drawing techniques. I call it Ripples because of the ripples moving over her body which were an accidental effect of the process. I used a photosensitive etching plate from a drawing on tracing paper. It looked all right but after it had been exposed in the UV light box, I noticed ripples on the plate from the slight undulations on the tracing paper. They were there because I used wet media for the drawing. But I like it, a happy accident. It’s going to be in the “Female Expressions” exhibition.

Coming To Neath!

25 Jan

cushion crop

Saturday 2nd – Saturday 23rd February. This is a detail of “The Cushion”, one of my etchings that will shortly be in an exhibition called “Female Expression” in the lovely Queen Street Gallery in Neath.

It’s part of a series of etchings of the nude which I called “Rinascere” which relates to the word Renaissance because I based the etchings on Renaissance drawing techniques.

According to the exhibition’s curator, Jocelyn Prosser, this is…
An exhibition celebrating the female form. Each artist will give a unique and deeply personal expression of the female condition. Although diverse there is a bond in this exhibition that connects. It reveals the strength and fragility within the female psyche.”

Another Life Drawing (Female Nude)

Another Life Drawing (Female Nude)…

Here’s another life drawing I did at Swansea Print Workshop’s drawing group this week. It was a thirty minute pose that I drew on my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet with a free Markers app.

I started with a mid-brown ground laid down with my finger and then worked the drawing up with a light brown large brush tool, again using my finger to draw. Finally I did some fine line work, using the stylus.

Back to life drawing (female nude).

I started back to life drawing group this week after a break of several months, life got in the way. I think the break did me some good, I’m a bit looser and I’m taking more chances and playing around with distorting the figure.

Warming Up

Here’s a quick warm-up sketch I did at life drawing last week at Swansea Print Workshop. After this I worked on a portrait study for an hour, but I find I need to have a quick scribble to start with, to get used to the model and pose before committing myself to a longer study.

Although it was done quickly, I really like the immediacy of it. I find that when I tell myself that something is just a warm-up or a practice, I am much freer and less inhibited in my approach.

Formidable

At the end of tonight’s life drawing session at Swansea Print Workshop, our model asked if she always looked ‘cross’ when she posed. I don’t think she looks cross at all, so I explained about what younger people call a “resting bitch face”. I roared with laughter when I first heard that phrase, but it really does sum up what happens when our faces relax. I’ve drawn hundreds of people and it isn’t possible to keep a natural smile going for very long, then our faces relax down into “resting bitch” mode. She has a great face, strong, formidable, full of character. I drew onto my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet with a free Markers app.

Life Drawing (Female Nude)

Just back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop. Our model has been working with us for seven years and she’s an absolute inspiration. Being an artist’s model isn’t just a matter of sitting still, good models bring an undefinable something to the creative process. I love going to the sessions, the group of artists is interesting and friendly and I usually make a cake for tea break. Today I made a classic Victoria Sandwich filled with home-made gooseberry jam. I grew the gooseberries on our allotment.

A Gallery Visit

SONY DSC

Husb and I paid a visit to the lovely Workers Gallery in Ynyshir in the Rhondda Valley today. I am one of the gallery artists and I wanted to change the work I’m displaying there. Each gallery artist has a bit of wall to display their work. The Workers also has a Main Gallery for curated exhibitions. It was the last day of Susan Zeppellini’s sculpture and drawing show, “The Crows Descend”, which is fantastic.

I’m exhibiting a large monotype titled ‘Scrutiny’ based on drawings I did working with a life model.

A lot of my artwork is available on my Artfinder gallery.  If you’d like to have a look, please click on the image below or the Artfinder link at the top right of this page.

Just Back ….

10 Aug

Just back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop and I am pretty tired now. I was working with a marvellous young model this evening,  using my Samsung Galaxy Tablet Note 8 with the free Markers app.  I used my finger to draw as much as I did with the stylus and kept overlaying tones one on top of the other. I made a simple sponge cake for our tea break, filled with home made gooseberry jam, made with fruit from our allotment.

Life Drawing (Female Nude )

20 Jul

Just back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop. This is an older model who I really enjoy working with. I made a banana cake with a fudgy chocolate and peanut butter filling for the tea break.  I used my Samsung Galaxy Tablet Note 8 with the free Markers app for the drawing.  Now I’m tired and off to bed after a nice cup of chamomile tea.
