I’ve been cutting some small experimental lino blocks to try out different ideas for a new piece of artwork based on the Welsh Miner’s Wives in the Miner’s Strikes in the 1980s. I cut one based on a newspaper photograph and one featuring text from a song sung by women on the picket lines. IContinue reading “An Archaic Artform.”

Inspired By P.P.P.
Back to Swansea Print Workshop this afternoon, third day in a row, carrying on with little experimental blocks researching my next print about the Miner’s Wives in the 1980s Miner’s Strike. I want to put some text into my work so I had a bit of a play with a lino block and some letteringContinue reading “Inspired By P.P.P.”
A Monotype Afternoon
Left to right: Using a 4H Reeves pencil; a Faber Castell Pitt 4B graphite stick: a KohiNoor 2B graphite block. I spent a happy afternoon at Swansea Print Workshop today, doing some direct line monotypes (aka linear, trace). It’s a technique I used to do lots, but haven’t for ages, I don’t know why. I’mContinue reading “A Monotype Afternoon”
Fabric Printing With A Dead Horse.
I spent the afternoon down at Swansea Print Workshop today, doing some fabric printing. It’s rare for me – I’m a paper fiend – but this is for something very specific. I’m printing onto some items of clothing with one of my little Mari Lwyd linocuts.
Mari’s Little Visit.
It’s nearly New Year and the Mari Lwyd is out and about, stalking the land. She comes into her full powers on the night of “Hen Galan”, the “Old” New Year on January 13th, but she’s just having a little visit now to wish you all Blwyddyn Newydd Dda … A Happy New Year.
A Mischief of Maris
I’ve finished printing a load of little Mari Lwyd linocut prints for Hen Galan cards in mid-January. As far as I know there isn’t an official collective noun for lots of Mari Lwyds, but quite a few people on social media have suggested a Mischief of Maris, to reflect the naughty, sometimes bawdy, nature ofContinue reading “A Mischief of Maris”
Mari Lwyd …. Printing It ….
I carried on with the little Mari Lwyd lino block that I cut the other day and started printing. I used Cranfield Litho / Relief SafeWash ink onto a lightweight fibrous paper made from recycled saris that I bought in Swansea Market. I’m happy with the proof print, now to make a whole lot ofContinue reading “Mari Lwyd …. Printing It ….”
That Time Of Year….
It’s that time of year again, the old year is fading out and in Wales the Mari Lwyd is starting to stir. For a few years now I’ve been making some New Year cards from linocuts I’ve done of the Mari Lwyd and here’s my new one, sketched onto lino and ready to cut. InContinue reading “That Time Of Year….”
The First Proof
I did some more carving on my new Mari Lwyd linocut this afternoon, more or less finishing the head. I thought I’d take a first proof print to see what else needs to be done to the head and to have a think about what, if anything, I might do to the rest of theContinue reading “The First Proof”
Cheese And Trackie Bottoms …..
It’s Boxing Day. Yesterday was Christmas Day. I’m on holiday so mostly I’m stuffing my face with cheese and cherry liquer chocolates, slobbing around the house in trackie bottoms and watching Netflix. But I managed to drag myself off the settee for half an hour earlier to go for a socially distanced and masked walkContinue reading “Cheese And Trackie Bottoms …..”
