Thanks Maggi

I’m rewatching the BBC documentary on the artist Maggi Hambling on the recommendation of an artist chum. First time round I only watched superficially but this time I’m much more connected to it. I love the way she just picks up a sketchbook every morning and draws. Nothing planned, nothing precious, just draw. I tend to get very precious about my work, I become rigid and subvert myself with my need to plan and control what I’m doing so I picked up a stick of willow charcoal, a piece of rough Khadi paper and drew. No model, no reference photo, no prior drawing …. just drew from memory. That was cathartic. I need to do more of it. Thanks Maggi.

A Chance To Own One Of My Artworks

I have some small screenprints for sale, inspired by my drawings of the taxidermy collection at Swansea Museum. I have given these antique artifacts a modern twist by combining them with images of rubbish – old fruit nets, bubble wrap and plastic – highlighting the problem of human pollution and how it affects wildlife.

To buy my work on the Swansea Print Workshop site please click the image to the left and to see the complete image.

20 percent of the cost of each screenprint sold goes to support Swansea Print Workshop, which receives no public funding.

Maggi Hambling Kicked My Backside

5 May

grayson perry

I watched Grayson Perry’s Art Club on Channel 4 (UK) last night. He’s one of my favourite artists and he’s doing this series to encourage people to get into making art during the Covid19 lockdown. The programme also features guest artists and last night it was Maggi Hambling, who is another one I really admire. She’s uncompromising and insisted that artists should draw every day. That was the kick up the backside I needed. I’ve been way too slack recently and haven’t been doing a daily drawing. So I did one on my lap as I watched the programme – there’s Grayson in the background on the TV.

sketchbook

I fnished a sketchbook a couple of days ago, a tiny Laura Ashley one, so I’m using this one now, very nice with a leather cover (I got it cheap). I have used it on and off for a while, when I wanted something larger than the tiny one, but there’s still over half the pages to go.
