Copying, Creativity, Cheese And Wine

I’m carrying on faking this Monet, “Cliffs At Grainval”, but it still needs more work. Not a lot, just a bit more faffing should do it. I started it on Friday with Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook. He’s been running it weekly since lockdown began over a year ago and it’s grown so much with hundreds of people joining in every week to copy a painting by a famous artist. I recently read an article in Artsy about how copying art actually increases creativity, which is good news. Here’s a link if you want to read it.

Friday Fakery

It’s Friday again so I joined in with the weekly Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook at lunchtime. It’s run by painter Ed Sumner who has kept it going every week since lockdown started. Today’s fake is “Cliff At Grainval”, a painting from 1882 by Claude Monet. I’m about half way through.

Pushing It

Oh, I hated doing this. But I pushed myself to finish because you don’t learn much by giving up. Margaret MacDonald’s original, The Mysterious Garden, was watercolour and ink over pencil on vellum and this copy is acrylic paint onto stretched canvas, so it wasn’t going to be easy to make an accurate fake. It’s not too bad though.

I started painting this last week during the regular Friday Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook, run by the painter Ed Sumner. It’s been going for just over a year now and it’s been such a great thing to do throughout lockdown.

Woman In Gold In A Minute And Lots Of Fakes

For most of the past year, since the first lockdown began, I have been painting fakes on Fridays with Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook. Here are the first 28 – I’ve got about another 20 since I did these.

I started copying this work, The Mysterious Garden, by the British Art Nouveau artist Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh on Friday with Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club over on Facebook. I have a fair bit more work to do on it and I’m finding it tough going because it’s a style of painting I’m unfamiliar with, much of her work was done on gesso panels and I’m using acrylic paint on canvas. I don’t know how much of a difference that makes but I’m struggling to copy her effectively. Ah well, never give up …..

Sticks Before My Eyes

I reached the point of no more faffing with van Gogh’s “Street Scene in Montmartre”. That’s it now. I’ve painted so many sticks I’m seeing them when I close my eyes. Vincent was living with his brother Theo in 1886 when he painted this, when the area was still very rural. It’s not like that anymore, although there’s a windmill, the Moulin Rouge, and a few vineyards. I started it a week ago with Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook. It’s every Friday lunchtime and Ed’s been running it for just over a year now, since Lockdown 1 began.

Faking The Ultimate Kitsch

Here she is at last, portrait of Monica Pon-su-san, aka The Green Lady by Russian artist Vladimir Tretchikoff. I started this in a Zoom tutorial with Ed Sumner who runs the Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook a couple of weeks ago. I really liked doing the details on the dress, it’s not something I would normally do. I remember the painting from my childhood, it was one of those that almost everyone seemed to have a copy of. It was immensely popular. I always thought it was the ultimate in kitsch and I still think it’s kitsch, but it’s good, well crafted kitsch and reflects the time it was made – mid 20th century. Here are some of the stages I went through with the painting.

Copper Crucibles Part 1

I took part in a Zoom art session recently which is inspired by Swansea’s industrial heritage. Copper Crucibles is a two part course, making small clay crucibles in moulds on one day and then, when lockdown restrictions are lifted and we can get out and about, we’ll be doing a raku firing for part 2. Our tutor is ceramicist Esther Ley and the course is funded and hosted by GS Artists and the 9to90 Creative Community. What’s really nice about this is that we’re learning about local history and chemistry as well as making ceramics. The little crucibles that we made are based on some found at the site of the old Morfa copper works in the Lower Swansea Valley and they were used for assaying copper ore.

Timelapse Sunflowers

Here’s a short timelapse film of the van Gogh painting of Sunflowers I recently copied. It’s got a really noisy soundtrack so watch out! I wish I could paint it this fast in real life – he was a very complex painter and the works take a long time to do.
