Finished Faffing And Faking

I finished Friday’s fake with minimum faffing this week. I paint along with Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club each week and I usually spend a few hours over the weekend finishing the paintings. But this week I only did about half an hour extra. This composition, Monet’s “San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk”, is quite a simple composition so there was plenty of time to concentrate on applying the paint. Monet used many layers of colours, overlaid in dashes, but I find that once I get stuck in, the paint goes on fairly quickly. Here are the stages of the painting.

A Bit Of Faff

It’s Friday so it’s faking day with Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook. Today we painted Monet’s “San Giorgio Maggiore At Dusk“. The original was donated to the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff by Gwendoline Davies. I used Liquitex Heavy Body acrylic paint onto a prepared canvas. I’ve done a lot in the one and a quarter hours but it needs a bit more faffing around before it’s finished. That’s what I’ll be doing this weekend.

Flicking And Faking

Today I finished faking one of Monet’s waterlily paintings that I started last Friday with the Cheese and Wine Painting Club over on Facebook. What I really liked about this one was learning to apply paint in different ways, not just using a brush. I used my fingers to smear, nails to scratch, a rag dipped in water to dissolve, and flicked water from my fingertips to get stipples and runs. I used Liquitex Heavy Body acrylic paint onto a recycled canvas.

Faking Friday, Murky Monet

What number is this fake? I think it’s 34. That’s a lot of painting, paint and canvasses since I started back last Spring with Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club over on Facebook. Every Friday lunchtime is a different painting by a famous artist to fake in an hour and a half. I’ve never finished and always have an hour or two more work to do. But that’s fine, I’m learning so much about painting. This week is one of the water lily pieces by the Impressionist artist Claude Monet, I think it’s the sixth of his so far. I’ll do some more work on it over the weekend, it’s a bit murky, I want to lighten it.

Faking And Baking … Again

I finished this fake Monet today – Tulip Fields. I started it the Friday before last in Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club and it’s taken me a while, but that’s the trouble with the Impressionists – all those little dots and dashes take ages.

And Husb did some baking today – our first mince pies of the season. Lovely. They will be shown no mercy 😀

Another Faking Friday ….

How many’s this? Twenty six? Twenty seven? I joined the Cheese and Wine Painting Club back in April when the first 3-week lockdown was extended, thinking I’d spend a few Fridays improving my painting skills. Now it’s nearly Xmas and painter Ed Sumner is still running it, because we’re still in lockdown. It costs a donation or it’s free for those that can’t afford to. This week it’s Tulip Fields by the Impressionist artist, Claude Monet. Still have a couple of hours work on this though. That’s tomorrow taken care of.

Sparta Puss And The Magpie

Today I finished off the copy I made of Monet’s painting “The Magpie”, started with Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook. So many shades of white! I used Liquitex heavy body acrylic paints, Daler Rowney brushes for acrylics and a primed canvas from Wilkinsons. Oh, and a couple of palette knives. In fact, I mostly used the palette knives, which is something new for me.

Sparta Puss isn’t impressed. We have a pair of magpies that return to nest in the tree next door every year and they are her sworn enemies. She’s never managed to harm them though. She’s a little on the ….. chunky side and can’t climb up as far as the nest. They torment her, throw stones at her and scream at her from the other side of the window when she’s indoors. She hates them.

Skull And Roses

I’ve been practicing my painting skills with the Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook, every Friday afternoon. This week our tutor, Ed Sumner, added an extra session on Saturday inspired by Halloween and Día de Muertos. It included a very thorough and useful instruction on how to draw a skull from scratch.

We started in pencil and then permanent marker pen before splashing very thin paint at random over the canvas. It was carnage – so much cleaning up to do after! It was exhilarating to be so free though. After the splashing about we learnt how to do roses. All very useful. I used Liquitex Heavy Body acrylic paint onto a stretched and primed canvas.

Faking Magpie

I had a faking fun Friday with painter Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club over on Facebook. Each Friday throughout lockdown Ed has hosted a painting session for people at all levels of ability, teaching painting skills by copying famous works of art. Today it was “The Magpie” by Monet. There’s a surprising amount of colours in it considering it’s a white wintry scene.

I haven’t finished yet, maybe another hour or so on it, mainly to work on the shadows and highlights. I did most of the painting with a palette knife, which was fun as I rarely use one. I’m learning a lot from these sessions. Ed asks people who can afford to, to donate something so he can keep it free for those who can’t afford to pay anything. There’s an extra session tomorrow at 16.30, a Halloween special.

The Finishing Touch: 1

I’ve had this fake Monet on my easel for over a week now. It was nearly finished but I couldn’t get around to doing the final touches until today. I wasn’t quite sure what still needed to be done – it’s easy to keep on and on working on something, especially a painting or drawing, and hard to know when to call time. When I came back to it this afternoon I decided that really all it needed was to knock the intensity of the colour back a bit by covering most of it with a very thin wash of white paint and water. The version on the left below was how I left it, the version on the right is how I finished it today.

The difference is very slight and in some ways I prefer the one on the left, but the purpose of the exercise was to try and make it reasonably accurate and the original painting has paler, more pastel colours, it’s not particularly bright. Here’s a detail, below, which gves a better view of the slightly chalky surface after I put on the white wash earlier.

In this one, I combined snippets of a bird and discarded plastic with the image of a bug, part of the Museum’s fascinating vintage collection.
