An Urban Sketcher In The USA

3 Nov

I follow quite a lot of other bloggers on WordPress, mostly artists, and this is one I admire very much. Pete Scully’s urban sketches are fabulous – they’re unassuming snippets of the small American town he lives in (mostly) but they are also beautifully drawn, gently chronicling modern life.

On a corner of Old North Davis is a house I drew at the end of a crisp sunny October day in 2008. I remember I left work early that day, and cycled up beyond 5th Street, still then a fairly unknown country for a South Davis-dweller such as me, to the Old North neighbourhood, […]

Luscious Leftovers

22 Nov

Here I am with over a hundred luscious leftover prints just arrived from The Workers Gallery in The Rhondda Valley

Once upon a time, the printmakers of Wingtip Press in Boise, Idaho, USA  were cleaning out their flat files and found dozens of little scraps of printmaking papers jamming up the drawers. Realising they probably weren’t alone with the dilemma of what to do with all those too-precious-to-throw-out leftover paper scraps, they issued an invitation to fellow printmakers around the globe to participate in a print exchange to use all those lovely bits of paper. Artists submit an edition of 14 miniature prints and received a dozen prints in return. One print is included in a silent auction to raise funds for the Hunger Relief Task Force in the State and the final one of the edition joins an international touring exhibition.

Now in its sixth year, the exchange include printmakers from Australia to Arizona, Canada to Colorado, Nevada to Norway to New Zealand, Korea to Kansas, Wales to Washington, and places in between.

The box of over a hundred little prints recently crossed the Atlantic from Reno to The Rhondda and is now about to be exhibited in Swansea Print Workshop through December and January.

My collection of twelve prints from Leftovers VI from artists across the world

The show opens with a traditional Welsh tea, with lashings of bara brith and other luscious home-made cakes, from 5 – 7 on Tuesday December 6th at Swansea Print Workshop and runs daily from 10.30 – 4.00 daily (except Mondays) with a break over the Xmas holidays, until January the 8th.

Venue: Swansea Print Workshop, 19a Clarence Street, Swansea SA1 3QR.

For more information please check the Swansea Print Workshop website.

Wingtip Press has just put out a call for Leftovers VII – if you’re a printmaker and you want to participate, please follow this link here.

One For My American Chums

Having a couple of days away and had a wander around Lewes in East Sussex today and chanced upon the White Hart Inn where Thomas Paine was known to have imbibed. His political views apparently inspired American Revolutionaries.

Mad Old Bat

2 May

One thing this trip to Boise, Idaho has already taught me, Get Out OF The Dark Age! When it comes to IT I’m so used to faffing around with lots of, mostly, archaic technology that I’m used to. My mobile phone is a phone, my PCs and laptop are out of the Ark, but you learn to cope until you’re in a situation where something doesn’t work as it normally does.If I stopped being a stubborn mad old bat and got a smartphone, it would have everything I needed in one place. I think I’m converting.

so I’m blogging on a borrowed Mac iPad and I haven’t yet figud out how to download photos so I can post them here. Hang on a minute, something’s happening. It’s linking to a photo, I think! well, let’s see what it’s done, eh?!

Yaaaay it’s one of the drawings I did from the bus taking me from Swansea to London to get the plane. It was very early and there was a low sun casting deep shadows acros frosted fields. Only enough time, s few seconds, to scribble quick impressions. Tomorrow I promise to find out how to put all the drawings up properly.

This artist residency is supported by Wales Arts International and Arts Council Wales.
