Fleeting Moments

I’m on a roll with the Baby Boomer sketches. I’m trying to do as many as possible at The SPace before our lease runs out in mid-February. If there are any Baby Boomers in the Swansea area who fancy posing for a 30 minute sketch and being part of this project, please get in touch. I can’t guarantee that it will look exactly like you – if I was doing a formal portrait I’d do loads of drawings over several sittings. Sometimes the sketches look very much like the sitter, sometimes not and sometimes just a bit. But the important thing for me is meeting and talking to other Baby Boomers and capturing those fleeting moments in a quick drawing.

Baby Boomers are those born between 1946 and 1964. I’m aiming to draw a hundred Baby Boomers over the next few months. I’m up to almost 30. Eventually the drawings will be converted to photographic silkscreens and put into a print installation.

First Nude Of The Year

Back to life drawing sessions at Swansea Print Workshop last night, the first of the year but I only stayed for the first hour because I went off to see The Good, The Bad And The Ugly at Swansea’s newest cinema, Cinema & Co – I’d forgotten what a brilliant film it is.

Anyway, I ended up getting the most foreshortened view possible of our model – oh joy. I’m rusty because I’ve had a few weeks off, well about a month, so this was a challenge. I recorded it on my digital phone as I went along so you can see all the mistakes!

 

 

I drew into an A2 sketchbook made up of brown paper and used white chalk and Winsor & Newton willow charcoal. The brown paper provides a handy mid-tone. Our model is an older man, so interesting to draw.

The Bagpuss Window

I’ve made Bagpuss look a bit mad, bad and dangerous. This is our sign.

People outside the UK might not know who Bagpuss is. Brits of a certain age have very fond memories of this children’s television series from way back in the 1970s. Bagpuss lived in a shop window which was full of curios and strange objects. Local artist Melanie Ezra and I have taken over an old shop in Swansea’s High Street, courtesy of Coastal Housing Group, and we’ll be working from the premises throughout September. It’s earmarked for demolition so it’s pretty ropey and we’re using it as a sort of pop-up studio for ourselves and some other artists, but we’re also using the window as a constantly changing display of our art, work-in-progress, materials, tools and all sorts of curious objects that inspire  and interest us.

It’s an arty Bagpuss window…….

This is what we did today. Mel did a sterling job cleaning up (I was otherwise occupied) and then we dressed the window for the first time. Sculptor David Meredith and Filmaker Melvyn Williams helped to manoeuvre two etching presses into position, lent by Swansea Print Workshop (thank you Jackie Ford).

I’ll be doing regular updates as the window changes throughout the month.

Making Marks

I’ve been asked to provide a piece for an exhibition to celebrate Art’s Birthday, which is next Monday. I’ve been give a 20 inch cardboard cube and I can do what I want in it. I’ve had an idea for quite a while to develop a drawing installation so I thought this would be a good chance to try out some ideas because the cube is just a very small room. I’m basing some drawings on digital images manipulated from original photos taken in Berlin a couple of winters back, when it was knee deep in snow. The temperature was about -20C but Germany didn’t grind to a halt. The trains carried on. The schools stayed open and kindergarten children were out in the grounds making tiny igloos with their little hands. How come a couple of centimetres of snow closes Britain down?

The drawing is on mark resist acetate film (Mylar) in Faber Castell Pitt pens sizes S, F, M and B. I’ve been interested for some time in the notion that drawing and writing are both about making marks that create abstract representations of the world and this is one of the motivations behind this project. There’s so much drawing involved that I get into ‘the zone’ and the marks come naturally, each looks unique, like snowflakes. I’m learning a lot by doing it – one of the things that’s become obvious is that I’m not likely to be able to draw a room-size installation with such small pens – I’ll have to find an alternative.
