Two Minute Head: 3

A quick, 2 minute. speed sketch from a load of heads I cut out from newspapers and stuck into a sketchbook. I don’t generally like to draw from photos, but doing it at speed makes it seem more intuitive and less like copying. Well it does to me anyway.

Two Minute Head: 2

I recently started to do quick sketches of heads from newspapers that I’d cut out and stuck in my scrapbook. Just 2 minutes for practice at getting down the essentials of a face, not the details. It’s good practice. I used to sketch out and about all the time, but I’ve become more reclusive sinceContinue reading “Two Minute Head: 2”

Two Minute Head: 1

I’ve been pretty slack about sketching for a while now. I used to scribble every day, but since Covid I’ve slacked off and I’m a bit mad with myself for it. So I’m going to try to do a 2 minute sketch daily, from newspapers. Come on, two minutes a day should be achievable???!!!! We’llContinue reading “Two Minute Head: 1”

Live At The Boxing Club: 6

The last of my scribbles from the Gwent Boxing Club in Townhill in Swansea. The lads are really, really fast so there was no time to do any detailed drawing, I could only do speed sketching. It was good practice to capture movement as quickly as I could. It was very intense, lots of concentration, but worth it becauseContinue reading “Live At The Boxing Club: 6”

Live At The Boxing Club: 5

Speed sketching gives variable results, sometimes catching fleeting moments quite accurately, sometimes the scribbles look like…well…scribbles. Sketches from my recent visit to the boxing club, these guys are so fast.

Live At The Boxing Club: 4

Scribbling away at the boxing club the other week, I was sketching movements and positions I hadn’t seen before, but these guys are so fast, I struggled to get anything resembling a human down on the page. But it’s really good practice, each tiny figure adds to my knowledge of how humans move, how we’reContinue reading “Live At The Boxing Club: 4”

Live At The Boxing Club: 3

The other week, I went and had a scribble at the Gwent Boxing Club in Townhill in Swansea. The lads are really, really fast so there was no time to do any detailed drawing, I could only do speed sketching. It was good practice to capture movement as quickly as I could. I could see movements and body shapesContinue reading “Live At The Boxing Club: 3”

Wassail!

I went to the annual Wassail and Mari Lwyd parade at the Gower Heritage Centre today. Last night was Hen Galan, the “old” (Julian) New Year, celebrated in Wales with the Mari Lwyd, but as well as the riotous Wassail yesterday evening (with much local Shed Head Cider by all accounts), there was also aContinue reading “Wassail!”

A Month Of Maris #17

Aaaaaaannnnddddd ….. another one. Here’s a quickie Mari Lwyd sketch in conté crayon into my brown paper sketchbook, from 2016. I think these very hasty sketches show the jollier side of the Mari Lwyd.

A Month Of Maris #16

Sometimes when I’m out and about sketching I have only a few seconds, maybe a minute or two, with a particular subject or pose, so I have to scribble away quickly, and the drawing often becomes very stylised. Here’s a Mari Lwyd from a few years ago, sketched at a Hen Galan pub crawl onContinue reading “A Month Of Maris #16”
