The Scariest Combo

29 Oct

When I started this epic task, to draw one hundred people of my generation, the Baby Boomers, there were two things that I found very hard to draw – spectacles and facial hair and the two together were the scariest combo of all. But now, with so much practice ….. not bothered at all …….. Here’s number 88 of my lovely sitters.

Specs And Beards

I’m on a bit of a roll with the baby Boomer sketches – here’s another. Over the years I’ve concentrated on life drawing and whole figure sketches, portraiture is fairly recent and I’ve fund that the two most difficult things to draw are spectacles and beards. And here is my latest model with both!

Beery, Beardy And Flatulent

Husb and I spent New Year’s Eve dancing the night away at a local nightclub to a groovy Funk disco and a fab Funk band called Disco Panther. Great time but I’m aching all over now. I don’t normally drink alcohol but tried a small bottle of a pale foreign beer with a vaguely South American name. Back in the day, I used to quaff large quantities of real ale, dark bitter stuff that you chewed your way through with names like Old Peculiar’s Rat Entrails and Rancid Tom’s Heavy. Thick, tasty stuff you drank from solid glass tankards. This ‘beer’ I had last night was pale, tasteless and served up in a plastic ‘glass’ with a wedge of lime. A Wedge Of Lime! OUTRAGEOUS!!!! After one ‘glass’ I went onto the fizzy water – it tasted better.

I did some scribbling in the crowd. I was struck by the amount of younger men sporting beards. Nearly everyone under about 35 had facial hair of some sort, even if it was only a tufty bit under the lower lip. And topknots as well. The public smoking ban has been around a few years, but although it’s great not to be breathing in vast amounts of second hand smoke, there’s nothing now to mask the smell of flatulence and in a jam-packed nightclub rocking with hot, sweaty dancers who’ve been knocking back the booze, the flatulence was pretty overpowering. But we still had a great time. Happy New Year everyone πŸ™‚

Baggies And Beards

Now I know I’m getting old. I sound just like my father when I see what young men are wearing these days. Baggy, baggy jeans halfway down their bums and beatnik, or is it hipster, beards. What’s wrong with waist length hair, crushed velvet loons and pretty, clean shaven faces, eh? Mutter, mutter ……

Mostly I blog at night and this is my 1001st blog post so I thought it was a neat title. I have just come back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop. I concentrated on portraiture this week.

It’s nice to have a very hairy person to draw and I got very Renaissance in my approach. I drew onto my Samsung Galaxy Tablet Note 8 using the free Markers app. I’m getting used to the function that is responsive to pressure.

Hairy Folkies

26 Aug

Went to see a fab band at The Garage the other night, The Peatbog Faeries, part of Husb’s birthday present. They’re sort of a fusion of Scottish folk/rock with trance/ambient undertones, overlaid with bagpipes. Fantastic. A get-up-and-bop-all-night band. I ached the next day! They were supported by a young local folk band, Thistledown. It’s good to see a new generation of young people making their own folk music. And it’s good for a scribbler to get to see lots of hairy faces! All in one place. They’re a bit of a pain to draw though πŸ™‚
