Chonk!

I can’t keep the creative juices flowing constantly. I think most artists are the same. It isn’t a 9 to 5 job. Some days I don’t make art, but I still like to draw, even for a few minutes, to keep my hand in. That’s where the cat comes in handy, she’s always around for a quick scribble. She’s getting to be a bit of a chonk!

Little Lulu

Here’s another family kitty…  shhhh …. don’t tell Sparta Puss! She’s a very slimline tortoiseshell cat called Lulu. I drew her on my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with a free app called Markers.

Drawing Obsessively

I’m getting a bit obsessed with drawing Mari Lwyds; I’m thinking of doing some larger artworks incorporating them so I’m drawing them from lots of different angles as preparation studies. I’m choosing random photos from the Internet at the moment, but I’ll be going out to do some en plein air drawings on the 13th and 19th of January. The first is an appearance by the Ystrad Mari (from Ystradgynlais) at Gellionen Chapel, the second a ‘meet’ or even a ‘mayhem’ of Mari Lwyds at the Chepstow Wassail (I don’t know if there’s a collective noun for them).

A Quick Digital Kitty

I’m still stuck in that state of post holiday lethargy and to be honest didn’t fancy doing any drawing today but it’s important for my artistic practice that I do, so I took the easy way out and grabbed my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet and did a quick digital sketch of Sparta Puss who is sparked out at my side. She’s even more lethargic than I am.

I use an app called Markers which is free to download and I drew it using a stylus – you get a different effect if you use your finger. I started by blocking out the background in black, then overlaid with white and tones of orange.

Lowest Of The Low

There’s a little Unitarian Church at the bottom of Swansea’s High Street and every year since, well, at least since I was a kid, which is a long time, there has been a glass case with a nativity scene in it and a charity collection box every Christmas. This year, the church has been collecting to support homeless people but someone broke into the collection box and stole the donations. The lowest of the low! What an awful thing to do. They have set up a crowdfunding page to try and raise some money to cover the loss. If you can spare a little and want to donate, please follow the link here.

I stood outside the nativity scene on the street a couple of days ago and had a bit of a scribble on my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet with a Markers app. Here’s Joseph. I find it odd drawing someone else’s art as I want to put my own stamp on it and it looks quite different to the original.

AfterLife

That’s after life drawing, which finished about half an hour ago at Swansea Print Workshop and I’m squeezing in a quick blog before I go to bed. This is the warm up drawing I did, just a few minutes to get used to the pose and I used my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with a free Markers app. This is an older model who is quite a character and has many interesting tattoos.

A Digital Head

I’m making some headway (pardon the pun) with my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet. I haven’t drawn with it for a couple of years but I restarted a couple of weeks ago in life drawing group at Swansea Print Workshop. I’m using a free app called Markers and I like the simplicity of it. However, when I open a new page I need to lay down a ground first and build up the drawing on top, otherwise it goes a bit funny and sort of reverses itself and has to be corrected in Adobe Photoshop. This portrait took about 20 minutes.

Life Drawing And Cake

1 Jul

This is a fairly quick drawing I did at life drawing session in Swansea Print Workshop on Thursday evening. I’m getting back into drawing with my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 using the free Markers app. There is some quite extreme foreshortening with that right foot.

I took along an apricot upside-down cake for the tea break. I like the way the apricots caramelised around the edges. I drizzled a little home-made elderflower cordial onto them before cooking the cake and it browned them nicely.

Fingertip Drawing

25 Jun

Here’s the second digital drawing I did at the life drawing session at Swansea Print Workshop earlier in the week. I was struggling with the stylus. It needs delicate handing and I’m out of practice, I haven’t used it for a couple of years, so I ditched the stylus and started using my fingertips, which was much more responsive.

A Digital Practice

After a long break of, oh …. a couple of years or so, I picked up my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet, called up the Markers app (it’s free, that’s why I like it so much) and took it to life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop earlier this week. I was way out of practice and this first drawing is very clunky, the line appears fractionally behind the stylus and it’s a bit disconcerting until you get used to it. Anyway, I’m practising for a specific piece of work I’m planning for later in the Summer, my first seriously planned digital piece, and I need all the practice I can get.
