#StandingStoneSunday 1.

Twlc Y Filiast.

There’s such a thing as Standing Stone Sunday over on Twitter so I’m posting a drawing and video from my travels with pre-historian Dewi Bowen and filmmaker Melvyn Williams a few years back. We tracked many of the Neolithic and Bronze Age standing stones across South Wales as Dewi was researching for his new book – out soon!!!!

In the video, which shows many of the stones, I talk about how I feel they are examples of monumental art in the landscape and how they inspire me. It’s only a few minutes, fancy a gander?

Phil is disabled by Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and the operation he needs isn’t currently available in the UK. I know times are hard, but if you’re able to spare a bob or two, please click here find out more or to donate a small amount to Phil’s crowdfunding campaign. Thank you xxx

Scribbling In A Heatwave.

Park Ping Pong.

Husb and I ventured out into the blistering heat later this afternoon, strolled into town and called into the cafe by the new park for a cool drink. There was a family playing ping pong so I had a quick scribble en plein air. Very quick, just enough to sketch out the basic components of the scene using the continuous line technique. Then I had some fun with mark-making, adding some texture and shading to break the scene up into it’s main ‘blocks’.

Ancient Fast Food Outlets Up A Mountain (with short video).

A Capstone At Mynydd Llangyndeyrn.

I’ve been looking though my YouTube channel and remembered the day I went up Mynydd Llangyndeyrn, a mountain with ancient stones, in Carmarthenshire. I was travelling around Wales with pre-historian, wit and raconteur Dewi Bowen and filmmaker Melvyn Williams. Dewi was doing field research for his new book, Melvyn was filming him and I decided to tag along and draw. This was near the beginning of our travels together, which eventually lasted three years.

Here’s a short (3 minute) film where Dewi explains how these prehistoric stones became fast-food outlets for ancient hunters and I get some drawing done.

The Irrepressible Dewi Bowen.

Dewi’s new book will be published soon, in the meanwhile, why not check out his previous book on Ancient Siluria and it’s standing stones here.

Scribbling The Music #2

High Speed Scribbling.

Here’s another speedy sketch I did at the Windshake gig at Elysium last weekend. The lead singer is very fast moving so I had to scribble quickly. Really fab band, loved the gig.

Back To Basics #2

The Colour Theory Mandala.

I carried on working on the colour theory mandala I started last week. It doesn’t do any harm to get back to basics now and again. I’m focusing on mixing colours at the moment but when they’re all in place, I’ll pay attention to the brushwork – it’s a bit rough. I’m using Daler Rowney System 3 acrylic paints onto a stretched canvas.

Scribbling The Music #1

A Fast Sketch.

I like going to gigs and I like sketching. I like sketching at gigs. Scribbling members of the audience is usually relatively easy as they’re normally absorbed in the music – unless there’s a mosh pit going on! Now and again I try drawing the musicians, which is often harder because they tend to move around a lot, so I have to focus on getting an impression rather than details. But I like the challenge. Here’s a very speedy sketch of the keyboard player and vocalist in Windshake that I went to see last weekend. They’re an excellent band.

Spotting a character

Lost In Dance.

When I’m sketching en plein air, it’s great when an unusual character comes along. It’s nice drawing anyone, but now and again someone exceptional appears. This guy was really getting into the band Windshake at the Elysium Bar the other evening. So I scribbled him.

Another Face In The Place.

Here’s another quick scribble I did last night into my sketchbook, at the Elysium Bar. Husb and I went to see singer songwriter Tom Emlyn and folk psychedelia band Windshake – great musicians all.

A Quickie In The Pub

A hastily scribbled head.

Husb and I went to the Elysium Bar this evening for some live music and of course, I had to have a quick scribble. There were plenty of interesting faces for me to sketch. Hats, glasses and beards are always a bit difficult and this chap had all three.

Back To Basics…

Doing A Bit Of Colour Theory

It doesn’t harm to get back to basics now and again and work on technique or theory. Or even maths! It’s so long since I did any geometry that I had to ask someone to help me to construct a mandala onto this canvas, with a pair of compasses and a ruler. I’m painting it using colour theory, starting with Primary and Secondary colours. Loads more to do on this one though.
