Hard On The Model

Here’s the first of the 30 minute poses from last night’s life drawing session at Swansea Print Workshop. I used sanguine conte crayon onto vintage paper size A2 – ish. It’s a good pose, really dynamic, but hard on the model, so much weight onto his right hand.

Just Back

Just back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop and it’s late. Here are the quick poses that we start with, to get us warmed up. Two 5 minutes poses and a 10 minute one. I used conte crayon in sanguine and black onto some vintage paper, size A2.

Walnut Two Ways

I used my home made walnut ink with two different tools at life drawing the other evening. I did the one above with a traditional dip pen, although I used a brush to do the hair and the swirly bits down the bottom. I find dip pens hard to use at first, I always press too hard and scratch the paper. I did the drawing below with a thickish round brush. Much easier to use than the dip pen and much freer as well.

Doing It Differently

Here’s a 30 minute pose from life drawing session last week. I pushed myself to do something a bit different and blocked in the figure roughly with a square end brush and some of my home made walnut ink, thinned to a pale-ish wash. Than I worked into it while it was wet with a conte crayon in sanguine, and added some stripes on the cloth with a small round brush. It’s much less detailed than my usual style but I like it.

The Gloucester Hole

I sat on the bank of the River Wye today, in Wales, looking across at England. The river forms the border in the town of Chepstow and Husb and I did a day trip and ended up there. I had a bit of a scribble en plein air on my Khadi paper sketchpad with Daler Rowney Artists’ Soft Pastels. It’s an impressionistic drawing, because the pastels are big and chunky and the paper has a very rough surface. That small dark patch on the limestone cliffs opposite is a cave called the Gloucester Hole. The river is very brown and muddy just here but it’s a gorgeous little town and river bank.

Sparta Puss And van Gogh’s Bedroom

I recently painted van Gogh’s Bedroom In Arles and here’s a one minute timelapse film of it. Sparta Puss “helped”. I painted it during a Zoom tutorial with the painter Ed Sumner who started the Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook at the start of lockdown in March 2020 to give people something to do. He’s still going strong. This copy is from the original from 1888 at Vincent’s home at 2, Place Lamartine in Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, France, also known as the Yellow House. He had decorated it ready for Gaugin’s visit and painted three versions.

The Three Quickies

Here are the three quick poses that we started with at life drawing last night, two x 5 minutes and one x 10 minutes. I used conte crayons in sanguine and black onto some A3 vintage paper. I haven’t worked with this model before and it takes me a while to get used to drawing someone new, so this first session was really about getting to know her face and body. It was a really good session, she’s a fab model.

The Sore Coccyx

Spare a thought for life models. It’s really hard work holding a pose for ages. This evening, at Swansea Print Workshop, our poor model’s coccyx started hurting. You can tell by her face. Although to be honest it was great from my point of view because it was a fantastic expression to draw. I’m a bad person!

We let her go, honest. We’re not that cruel. Late now, time for bed.

Scribbling On Zoom

I was at a Zoom meeting this evening and I had a bit of a scribble, with a ballpoint pen onto my lined notepad. Just a quick one to keep my hand in. I like the proportions of the Zoom box, that elongated landscape format.
