Framing The Model

Here’s the last life drawing I did at this week’s session, it’s a 50 minute pose and I used Daler Rowney Artist’s soft pastels onto a heavyweight vintage paper. It’s always a bit of a problem fitting the model onto the paper, so framing the subject is important. I decided to put our model intoContinue reading “Framing The Model”

A Bit Skewiff

Here’s a 30 minute drawing from the life drawing session at Swansea Print Workshop the other evening. I went a bit skewiff with this one, with some deliberately wobbly lines, having a bit of fun with the shapes and pushing myself away from representational drawing. I’m using Daler Rowney soft pastels onto vintage paper. AContinue reading “A Bit Skewiff”

Taking Liberties

Here’s another life drawing from yesterday evening’s session at Swansea Print Workshop. I use standard sheets of paper and rarely cut them into another shape, which I suppose is a bit lazy. It’s often difficult to fit the subject into the paper without either cutting bits off or having lots of empty space. I loveContinue reading “Taking Liberties”

From Sketch To Drawing

I have sketchbooks stuffed full of drawings stuffed into cupboards but I rarely work from them, once they’re done they tend to be forgotten. So I’ve decided to go back to them and try and develop something using different materials. This is a recent sketch in ballpoint pen done in a local quarry. It’s linearContinue reading “From Sketch To Drawing”

Finally Finished Vincent’s Bedroom

I finally finished faffing with van Gogh’s painting of his bedroom in Arles. I started it a few weeks ago on one of painter Ed Sumner’s Zoom tutorials. It’s a lot more complex than it looks. Vincent’s brushwork is multi-layered and his composition, although it looks simple, has some difficult distorted perspective. Of course IContinue reading “Finally Finished Vincent’s Bedroom”

Faffing With Vincent

I’m still faffing with this copy of Vincent van Gogh’s “Bedroom In Arles”, it’s a lot more complex than it looks at first, as are all his paintings. Although the composition is relatively simple, the complexity is in the layers and layers of paint piled thickly onto the surface of the canvas. I love itContinue reading “Faffing With Vincent”

FINISHED!!!!!!

Finished faffing and faking Franz Marc’s “The Yellow Cow”. It’s very richly coloured with lots of layers of glazes built up on top of each other, lots of blending too. Took a while but I really enjoyed it. I started it with Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook last week. Here areContinue reading “FINISHED!!!!!!”

Carrying On With The Yellow Cow

I’ve been carrying on faking the Franz Marc painting of a yellow cow I started last week. The composition is fairly simple and although the colours look simple as well, they’re actually quite complex with lots of overlays and blending. That’s what’s taking the time. I’m hoping to finish it tomorrow. I started this withContinue reading “Carrying On With The Yellow Cow”

Checking My Tones

I’ve spent the past couple of hours on the second part of Ed Sumner’s Zoom tutorial, painting Edouard Manet’s “Bar At The Folies Bergere”. Ed suggested using the wonders of modern technology to take a digital photo in black and white to check the tones of our paintings and compare with the original (he providedContinue reading “Checking My Tones”

Pushing Me Hard

I did some more work on my copy of Impressionist artist Edouard Manet’s “Bar at the Folies Bergere” today, getting the figure blocked in and making some adjustments to the size and shape of the bottles in the foreground. At the moment there’s very little colour in it, black, white and warm greys, but thereContinue reading “Pushing Me Hard”
