Käthe And The Clothes Horse

I printed up and the two silkscreens I have been working on for the last week or so. I’m doing some editions from drawings I made of some of my favourite artists starting with Suzanne Valadon and Käthe Kollwitz. They’re small enough to print at home, if they were large I’d have booked the vacuumContinue reading “Käthe And The Clothes Horse”

Valadon Screen – Next Step

I left the Speedball Diazo drawing fluid to dry overnight after I had done my drawing of the artist Suzanne Valadon onto my screen. The next step is to mask it with the Speedball Filler. I drizzled a line of it, after a vigorous shake, at the top edge of the drawing (the screens wereContinue reading “Valadon Screen – Next Step”

Evil Foreshortening (Female Nude)

Just back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop. I had a choice of where to sit so, thinking aloud I said, “Shall I sit side on to draw an easier pose or shall I sit front on and do the really nasty foreshortening?” My sadistic fellow artists said, as one, “Front on! Do theContinue reading “Evil Foreshortening (Female Nude)”

Practice Makes Perfect (male nude)

Just back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop and it was a tough one this evening. The pose is deceptively difficult, with foreshortening of the hands and legs and the model leaning back made the head a bit odd too. I struggled, using several grades of graphite stick onto a vintage Saunders paper. IContinue reading “Practice Makes Perfect (male nude)”

Really Difficult (Female Nude)

Just back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop. I spent an hour drawing this pose in compressed charcoal, chalk and conte crayon, black and white, onto a piece of Saunders vintage paper. It had some severe foreshortening, with both hands and the left foot going in different directions. It’s the most difficult poseContinue reading “Really Difficult (Female Nude)”

Print’s Birthday!

It’s Swansea Print Workshop’s 15th anniversary party this coming Friday 27th March from 7pm with a lovely exhibition of original prints from artists who have produced art here throughout our 15 years. There will also be wine and food and cake and our wonderful antique printing presses. Please pop in and bring your friends ifContinue reading “Print’s Birthday!”

Big And Free?

Here’s the other drawing I did at the life drawing session at Swansea Print Workshop last night. I did something a bit different this week and uploaded a copy of a cyanotype I did some time ago (it’s in the permanent collection of A Book About Death, Wales) and drew over it. I’ve been usingContinue reading “Big And Free?”

From The Back

Just back from life drawing at Swansea Print Workshop. I drew the back view of the model reflected in the large wall mirror. I used my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with a free Markers app. I made a pineapple upside down cake for the tea break. It was still warm and welcome on a cold,Continue reading “From The Back”

An Older Woman (Female Nude)

I like to work with this older model at life drawing group at Swansea Print Workshop. She is covered with blue tattoos of plants and animals that belong to the food chain; ants and flies run all over her body, chased by lizards and they swarm over her shoulders into carnivorous pitcher plants. She isContinue reading “An Older Woman (Female Nude)”

A Bit Of Columbian

I was down at Swansea Print Workshop earlier and took some time to scribble the lovely old Columbian printing press. Dating from quite early in Queen Victoria’s reign (1855) this beauty is still in use, even though it’s a little bit wobbly and idiosyncratic. It’s quite complex and I’m right out of my comfort zone,Continue reading “A Bit Of Columbian”
