I went along to a raku firing this evening, headed up by local ceramicist Esther Ley at the National Waterfront Museum. I’d made some little clay crucibles a while back – part of the Swansea University Copperworks Project – and today was the decorating and firing session. They had already been fired once, the bisqueContinue reading “Copper Crucibles Part 2: The Raku Firing”

Copper Crucibles Part 1
I took part in a Zoom art session recently which is inspired by Swansea’s industrial heritage. Copper Crucibles is a two part course, making small clay crucibles in moulds on one day and then, when lockdown restrictions are lifted and we can get out and about, we’ll be doing a raku firing for part 2.Continue reading “Copper Crucibles Part 1”
An Arty Morning
Husb and I had an arty morning today. I carried on working on two of the paintings I’m copying at the moment and Husb did some more on his self-portrait. I’ve been doing copies every week with Ed Sumner’s Cheese and Wine Painting Club on Facebook for almost a year now and Husb began hisContinue reading “An Arty Morning”
Free Zoom Art – Skulls And Sticking
I’m an educator as well as an artist and I run a lot of art sessions and workshops, on Zoom in these pandemic times. I have a free one coming up, “Get Sticky With Scribblah”, organised by GS Artists in Swansea and the 9to90 Creative Community, on Saturday (27th February) 10.30 – 12.30 UTC. ClickContinue reading “Free Zoom Art – Skulls And Sticking”
Uncle Bryn In Gouache
I finished this gouache portrait sketch of the Welsh actor Rob Brydon, in his incarnation as Uncle Bryn from Gavin and Stacey. It’s for the GS Artists / 9-to-90 Creative Community Art Festival in Swansea. Last year the subject was Michael Sheen – I did him in embroidery. I think I got a better likenessContinue reading “Uncle Bryn In Gouache”
Nearly But Not Quite
I did some more painting today – what’s going on with me? I’ve hardly painted since I was in art college back in the 1970s and now I can’t stop. The fabulous GS Artists have been organising free art tutorials, a mixture of Zoom and on-site (observing safety protocols of course). It’s part of theContinue reading “Nearly But Not Quite”
Michael Sheen Is Finished!
I finally stopped working on Michael Sheen lunchtime today – I’ve been stitching him up for a week and a half. In my spare time mind, not 24/7. He’s nestled with all the other Michael Sheens down at GS Artists on Swansea’s High Street right now, waiting for the big exhibition opening this Saturday atContinue reading “Michael Sheen Is Finished!”
Will It Ever End?
Still at it, stitching my portrait of Michael Sheen. Getting there but not got there yet. I must hand it in by lunchtime tomorrow. It’s going everywhere with me at the moment, to the pub, to the art gallery. I’m sitting and stitching like the knitters in front of the guillotine back in the FrenchContinue reading “Will It Ever End?”
Yeah You Guessed It ….
Yeah you guessed it …. I’m still stitching that portrait of Michael Sheen. He has a mouth now and the beginnings of eyebrows and his face is nearly finished. I think I can get his hair done this evening. I have about 36 hours to finish it.
Switching Stitching
Still working on Michael Sheen. I’ve nearly finished stitching his face so I had a bit of a change and switched to working on a few curls. His hair is quite salt and pepper in the reference photo, which gives very good definition to the curly bits. I’m making this for the 9 to 90Continue reading “Switching Stitching”
