Rainy Day With A Cat

12 May

Husb and I have been visiting friends and today it poured with rain, so we mostly stayed in and chilled out with the cat. I had a bit of a scribble. She looks quite different to my cat, really. She stayed still for a few moments while I tried to do a portrait, then she got bored and turned her back on me and went to sleep. Just like my cat. Really.

Kittens! No art. How can I make art with kittens around? We’re looking after two little kittens for some friends while they’re away for the weekend. They’re brothers and a cross between a common-or-garden tabby and a Bengal. Half exotic and all fluff, energy and cuteness overload. Except when they’re running across the computer keyboard when I’m trying to blog. And stealing my pen.

A lot of my artwork is available on my Artfinder gallery.  If you’d like to have a look, please click on the image below or the Artfinder link at the top right of this page.

Messi Moggy

4 Apr

My first blog post in Pakistan just had to be a kitteh. This is Messi who is named after Lionel Messi, the Argentinian footballer who plays for Barcelona. Messi lives in the house where I’m staying.

There is also a printmaking studio with accommodation attached for the artists in residence. Yesterday was spent recovering from the travel; it was about 24 hours from door to door. Today I’ve been in the studio, discussing a work programme with some of the other artists and, obviously, hanging out with Messi Moggy.

This residency has been supported by Wales Arts International and Arts Council Wales.

Ming And The Mickey Finn

Greetings bald monkeys. Sparta Puss here. I’ve managed to wrest the pooter box from my trained apes. It’s been a while, but frankly, I couldn’t be bothered to do anything much in this hot weather except lie around in a shady nook and throw a few half-dead rats at my hairless she-ape.  It amuses me.

We had a bit of excitement. My fellow goddess, Ming the Merciless had an ingrowing claw, so my bald he-monkey phoned the vetape to make an appointment and he clearly told the vetape that Ming is a complete and utter psychopath and would have to be slipped a Mickey Finn or she would try to murder him. So he agreed and my bald he-monkey took Ming the Merciless to the vetape and when he got there he took her into a room where there was a vetape, a nursemonkey and a Mickey Finn.

Now the thing about Ming is that she is very tiny, very fluffy and has only one eye. And all the hoomankeys think she’s cute. FOOLS! So the vetape said he’d cut her claws without a Mickey Finn and my trained monkey said ‘NO, she’ll go nuts’ but the vetape and nursemonkey were cooing over Ming and ignored my bald ape. So she made them bleed. Lots. That’ll teach ’em.

The she-ape went away to England and came back with a drawing of a foreign cat called Scooter. She is a tabby stripey cat who moves around her house lying in the puddles of sunlight. I like her style.

Kittiwakes And Kitteh Sleeps

15 Jun

Having a spot of time away on the South East coast of England and went for a walk in gale force winds (although it was sunny) to Splash Point at Seaford Head to see a colony of Kittiwakes, who arrive every year around Easter and leave, according to local lore, the day before the Eastbourne Airshow. The wind was so severe that I could only spend a few moments scribbling; the high tide was crashing around me as well. Here’s the little sketch I made of Kittiwakes clinging to a large rock in the ocean a few yards from the massive chalk cliffs.

And then back indoors out of the gale and my friend’s kitteh sleeping in a shaft of sunlight.

Drawn into my A5 pink silk recycled sari sketchbook with Faber Castell Pitt pens, sizes S and F in sepia.

Felix Envy

Hello fur-less monkeys. Sparta Puss here. I’ve got my paws on the pooter box again. The feeble-minded apes that I choose to live with went away to an icy land last week – in the middle of winter! I mean, honestly!  They paid to be cold when they could have stayed home with us and the central heating for free. Idiots. The she-monkey took her scribbly stuff away but didn’t draw any cats. She says she didn’t see any cats. No surprises there, Sherlock. No self-respecting kitteh would bother to live in an icy land.

So today the hairless primates went out into the cold to visit friends and the she-monkey drew their cat. He’s a fine figure of a Tabby called Felix. He lives in the countryside in a detached house with 3 acres of hunting grounds and his own personal wood-burning stove. Ming the Merciless and I are envious, our monkeys are obviously not working hard enough!

ps I just brought in a mouse! Hear the monkeys shriek! See them run around, flapping their monkey arms.
