Swansea Jack

Husb and I spent a lovely couple of hours at a performance of “Swansea Jack”, researched, written and performed by the talented storyteller Carl Gough. We people from Swansea are nicknamed “Jacks”, supposedly after the heroic black Labrador dog who saved many people from drowning in the 1930s. Of course, I had a quick scribble,Continue reading “Swansea Jack”

Quick Sketch

Here’s a quick sketch I did at an event the other night, a talk on women’s political action across Europe, one of the International Women’s Day events.

Ban The Bedroom Tax!

This is a monotype I made from an original drawing I did in my sketchbook at a demonstration against the “Bedroom Tax”, or Spare Room Subsidy, introduced by the government in 2012. It resulted in hardship for many people. It’s one of the artworks I’m exhibiting at Swansea’s Cinema & Co in a joint showContinue reading “Ban The Bedroom Tax!”

Tent City II

Here’s another monotype I did recently with chine collé from an original sketchbook drawing at London’s “Tent City” a few years ago, the Occupy London protest outside Saint Paul’s Cathedral. My sketchbooks are full of scribbles from life and I don’t often find a way of using them, but recently I’ve done a small seriesContinue reading “Tent City II”

Proud Pads Against Period Poverty

Wow, what a fab evening at Cinema & Co last night, celebrating International Women’s Day in style, with art, films and lashings of home-made cake. Here’s the lovely Laura Niehorster, a Swansea designer and entrepreneur, talking about her amazing product “Proud Pads”. Laura is also a campaigner against period poverty.

Lashings….

Two revolting women just finished setting up our exhibition which opens tomorrow evening (March 8th) at Cinema & Co from 5.30. That’s Patricia McKenna-Jones and yours truly. If you’re out and about in Swansea tomorrow evening, pop in and see us. There’s lots going on and there will be lashings of home-made cake. Please clickContinue reading “Lashings….”

It’s All About The Technical Details!

March 16th and 17th at Swansea Print Workshop I’m running a course in woodcut printmaking using MDF. “Q. Can you use MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) for woodcut prints? A. Yes you can – as long as you get the technical details right. Q. And how do I make sure that I get a nice qualityContinue reading “It’s All About The Technical Details!”

Playing With Words

I was really inspired to do more text-based work after completing “Here Be Dragons”, my recent commission for the Sky Arts TV Channel. I find myself doodling words and letters and making them more visual, more pictorial. Here’s the start of a new woodcut – maybe. I’m working it up in my home-made walnut inkContinue reading “Playing With Words”

Bunting

I spent a lovely hour or so painting bunting at an event organised by Women4Resources,  a small organisation working with women and girls in partnership between Wales and Africa to promote education. Today was about promoting wellbeing and I loved just chilling out with women of all ages, chatting and doing some painting for fun,Continue reading “Bunting”
