Painting Upside Down 1.

I started this painting a couple of months ago (here), working on top of a canvas I’d recycled because I didn’t like the previous painting. Because of that, it’s quite heavily textured, which is something new for me. I’m used to working on paper, drawing and printmaking, or new stretched canvas for painting, much smootherContinue reading “Painting Upside Down 1.”

It May Be Finished!

I think this little painting may be just about finished. I’ll sleep on it, but I don’t think I’ll be doing much more, maybe a little softening on the arm. I’ve never done anything like this before, working directly from a sketch and splashing paint randomly in layers, scattering rice into pools of watery pigment,Continue reading “It May Be Finished!”

Going Psychedelic!

I’ve swirled a final watery paint layer onto my two girls – this time in Pthalo Blue (red shade) from Liquitex, tipping the canvas so the paint ran across randomly. I dabbed at parts with a paper kitchen towel to reveal the yellows, reds and oranges beneath and threw more rice onto it, forming aContinue reading “Going Psychedelic!”

Layering Transparency.

After laying down a translucent ground of Indian Yellow acrylic paint (Liquitex Heavy Body), I brushed some watered down transparent Naphthol Red (a hot, bright red) and tipped the canvas so it formed runs and drips across the yellow areas. As an experiment I threw some grains of rice across it to see what wouldContinue reading “Layering Transparency.”

The Start Of A Painting.

I did a sketch at a fundraising event last week and I like it so much that I’m going to have a bash at making a painting from it. I don’t normally paint from sketches, although I often develop printmaking projects from my sketchbooks, so I’m going to have to approach this in a veryContinue reading “The Start Of A Painting.”

Another Start….

A few days ago, I recycled some paintings I didn’t like, and today I used one to start a new painting. The surface is very sculptural now and I scraped two layers of paint on, the first coat in cadmium orange and the second in mars black (Liquitex Heavy Body acrylic). I’m working from oneContinue reading “Another Start….”

Being Bolder ….

Carrying on with my most recent painting, I realised that I’m pussyfooting around and I need to get a lot bolder and stop worrying about it. If it goes wrong, I can paint over. I’m using Liquitex Heavy Body acrylic paints and I can cover up mistakes if I need to. I had a quickContinue reading “Being Bolder ….”

The Finished Bottom…

Almost finished copying Dali’s painting “Christ Of Saint John Of The Cross“. Today I did the final details on the bottom half of the picture, the sea and sky, the distant mountains and the foreground figures. I’m using Liquitex Heavy Body acrylics onto a stretched canvas with Winsor & Newton brushes for acrylics. It’s muchContinue reading “The Finished Bottom…”

Giving It A Go

It’s almost half a century since I rocked up, in flares and platforms, at the Foundation Course in Swansea Art School, determined to be a painter. Then I did the module in printmaking and retired my paintbrushes. Until the pandemic lockdown started in Spring last year. We were only allowed out of the house forContinue reading “Giving It A Go”

Painting My Plums A Bit More

I started to paint a still life of plums from a food photo I took way back at the beginning of the Covid19 lockdown last Spring. I was cooking like a maniac and my creativity was channelled into photographing what I was doing. The photo is from a recipe called “Hot Buttered Plums” – hereContinue reading “Painting My Plums A Bit More”
